Current Zar note: This particular post is from January of 2024. I left it mostly the same except for some minor clean-up.

Anyway I ended up getting caught in the gameloop of Sims again pretty hard, which was kind of nostalgic, haha. It's been a very very long time. It's not the same as the others of course, but there are some things in it I do really like. Toddlers in particular are absolutely perfect, they're just precious beyond words. The way they move, the sound of their voices, their little moods and thoughts, the things they can do and learn, it's all just incredibly precious. Every time they're around I'm just like awww. Awwwwww. I haven't seen much of children but toddlers are just so cute. They're SO CUTE and they have a ton of work and detail put into them, it really shows. If the adult sims had this kind of care put into them I don't think people would be complaining as much.

Some of expansion packs feel like they were sliced in half just to chisel more money of you, and some are more egregious about it than others (Cats and Dogs -> My First Pet Stuff, derisively called dlc of dlc and rightfully so). I just can't help comparing the Sims 3 Pets expansion to the Sims 4 ones. And I say ones because Sims 4 split all the animals across three different expansion packs. Sims 3 Pets gave you cats and dogs and small animals AND horses in one pack, but you have to spend more money to get all of those animals in 4. Well, they actually backtracked and made My First Pet Stuff free after the backlash but still. In particular some expansions of the Sims personalities and behavior and thoughts and aspirations and all that were only IN expansion packs! That's nonsense! Basic Sim behavior should be in the base game! Stuff like that really rubs me the wrong way.

Even when there's good or fun stuff in an expansion, I can't help but be aware of just how predatory it is in trying to get every last cent from you. The experience in Sims 4 is so different with the expansion packs in part just to get you TO buy them. It's so exploitative. Even when I'm enjoying things in it it's in the back of my mind. If I hadn't found all the packs and such when they fell off the truck then I can only imagine how resentful and ripped off I'd feel about a lot of these. To get a satisfactory experience you have to sink SO much money into expansions that only give you a fraction of what the packs in 2 and 3 and even 1 did.

And it's a shame because some of the stuff is really fun and has a lot of detail and thought put into it! Some of it. And there's still a lot I haven't even explored yet.

Anyway, more interesting stuff happened this time so I've got a whole batch of caps for you, just like ye olden days. There's 400+ caps in here! When was the last time I posted that many caps at once? To be fair, a lot of these are cropped and resized to focus on the more important things in a shot (who was it that recommended FastStone Image Viewer? It made editing and cropping these a lot easier than in Photoshop).

I made two new families and you can probably guess who they are. I also revisited the ladies for a while! And touched up Denka and Dowasure a bit. Most of the focus is on the other households though...

Get to Work is a fun expansion since I'm really enjoying going to the three new careers and doing things during each day, it's fun! It's a nice change of pace and they're all pretty different from each other too. It'd be nice if some of the other jobs got this treatment too, honestly, although I can see how it'd get exhausting. You do have the option to skip following along to work though and letting the Sim just do it themselves.

This one is a bit hard for me to notice because I hadn't spent any time with the kids or toddlers before this point, so I'm not sure what they added. Aside from the parenting skill, haha. That's on me though, I don't have a baseline for comparison.

I haven't used this too much, I should take the babies out for playtime some time and see.

Very cute! Lots of fun interactions and little quirks for each of the pets, and a lot of customization options. Would've been better if horses and hamsters and other pets like birds or snakes were included though.

I got this for the skeleton form honestly. I haven't done the vacation trip yet because my sims are too poor lol. Maybe if I can get them some money I can check it out and see how it compares to 3's World Adventures (which had three worlds instead of just one).

Seasons! Love being able to see them change clothes. I've set up in the desert-y town out of nostalgia for Strangetown from 2, but I think that's made it so it doesn't snow. :/ Maybe I should move some of my Sims to another town? But I like having them together and seeing them in the background of each other's lives... is there an override for snow in the desert...? Definitely loved the thunderstorms in spring and summer. The holidays are also a fun new thing! I'm not sure if I got the Seasons one for 3, I wonder how it compares...? I should check Red Plumbob's channel about it and see.

Got this one because I was intruiged by the POSSESSED emotional state and I wanted Jockey to get it. Not sure how to do that though... I need to get her over into the town I think? I'm not sure if it's a vacation town? I don't know, I need to look into it.

Knitting is a cute hobby, thought it might be fun to see. I can see Smoker getting into knitting.

Surprising amount went into this one for a pack that sounds like a stuff pack. Lots of great winter clothes and boots and a cool new world with a lot of flair and detail! And new festivals too I think. I only dabbled in skiing but it could be fun to get some Sims into. Maybe Hunter could go snowboarding lol.

Just liked the idea of haunted houses and ghosties. I put down a haunted house in the neighborhood but when I visited it no one could go in. I think I need to make a family and move them into the haunted house. I might put Kaggie and Kax there, if I can't think of someone who'd fit a ghost house more... (Duster and Kumatora?)

I wasn't sure about this one and then it said it had wild foxes and i was like SOLD. I'm also intrigued by the farming and cows and such although I haven't had any Sims really explore that yet. I wonder who I could set up with that...? I could give them to the ladies but they already have so much going on, haha.

The social dynamics things here should be in the base game frankly, it's ridiculous it's in an expansion pack. The family dynamics are cute too, if they're what I'm thinking of. I think I've seen that icon for some options and this is where it comes from. This also lets you add MORE traits to your Sim depending on their behavior which should ALSO be in the base game. :/

Anyway, it lets you decide what season to start in! Don't Starve vibes, haha.

Anyway LET'S START EXPLORING TODDLERS

This skeleton mod for this is perfect EXCEPT that the skeletons can't wear clothes. They can wear accessories and hats and have hair (certain types of hair that don't have the scalp showing) but you can't really have them wear anything. I guess skeletons don't have anything to hide so it's not that big a deal but it's still a bit odd. Baby Sans is broader than Papyrus but it's a bit hard to tell at first glance. I had some help because I picked up some poofy scarf cc that counts as an accessory, so I could use that for Gaster, but they aren't available for toddlers, so I had to resort to other things. I ended up fiddling with Sans and Papyrus quite a bit as the caps go on. At first I was like well maybe Papyrus is wearing a fetching wig but then I changed my mind later lol.

Usually when I move a new family in, I wait and watch to see what they do on their own initiative first. Sims 4 sims take a WHILE to make their own decisions.

Of course Papyrus wants to be friendly.

You can see the human face at the bottom, the skeleton form is really a full body costume, that's why they can't wear other clothes. There are certain situations where you can't control what they're wearing and they'll go back to their human forms temporarily. For Papyrus here I just forgot to set his other outfits lol.

Bath time! Sans is human again here, anytime they get naked they turn human again, so baths and showers basically. Gaster sounds so fond of the babies when he does this, I know that makes sense since you'd assume all the Sim parents love their babies but it does get a bit surreal.

Anyway I decided to make Gaster a scientist of course and got to join him on his first day of work! I had no idea what to expect!

You can see Gaster's human form here, I don't have any control over his work outfit I think. That facepaint is meant more for Sans or Papyrus, but it keeps reminding me of juggalo facepaint... eventually I ended up removing it later, but for now you'll see it a lot.

But you get to go to a full workplace and complete little tasks! Improve your work performance to get promoted! It's fun, haha. Gaster wants cupcakes.

It takes a while for toddlers to learn how to handle the stairs, which made the early days tricky for Gaster since he sleeps downstairs while they sleep upstairs (they live in a rough facsimile of their house, I didn't get it JUST right but it roughly maps to it). It was a big relief when they finally learned! They slowly inch their way down each step and it's so cute. Takes forever though.

Eventually I could cheer Sans up with some jokes, but I wasn't expecting comforting not to work. Not sure why Gaster popped this as a result, maybe that was why it didn't work, idk. I don't know what to do with this mood!

Anyway, back to revisit the ladies with better outfits! The pets expansion had the perfect thing for Hunter! Cat ears and short messy hair! Absolutely perfect. They also had a nice assortment of sweaters and sweatshirts for her but this fox sweater was so charming... I couldn't resist it...

Gave her a better formal outfit, I also picked up a halloweeny gore pack and accidentally gave her bleeding eyes and decided to keep them. Could turn into a zombie any second!

Everyone looking much better! One of the packs had the perfect hair for Charger which went a BIG way to making her look more like herself, and had another great match for Smoker too. I also touched up Jockey but she's in her sleep clothes here, but she has better hair too.

Thanks Jockey. But yeah you can see her hair here, it's still in a braid (with a bow!) and I like how the loose hair frames her face.

I then decided to delve into pets and made a fox. Swift from the David the Gnome specifically.

You might have been wondering about Gaster selling drugs up there! Well actually I wanted to get Smoker some cigarettes, and yamina recommended this mod (needs this base one to work)! It includes a bunch of different drugs but the cigarettes were what I was interested in. I wasn't sure how to get them until I saw I could place a vending machine! So here's Smoker picking out a brand.

The cool thing about this one is that they actually do smoke the cigarette! In 3 I could only have Smoker hold one, haha. Although I think they've advanced on that a lot now. It adds a lot to have Smoker ACTUALLY smoke, haha.

I have noticed there's a lot of popping and weird clipping with the cats when they jump onto or off things. It's not game breaking but it is a bit :/, although what Sims game isn't without its glitches lol.

In one of the expansions they added a REAL fish tank I could put fish in finally, although you can't feed them. You CAN view them though which Charger loves to do. She did catch the fish I put in there, to be fair.

Edgar and Scri have good chemistry, this is in part to me giving Edgar some likes that aligned with Scriabin's behaviors, like insults or arguments or mischef, that kind of thing, mostly to try and keep the house from entirely falling apart.

Oh I made Scri a clubber because it's one of the things in the drug mod, it says he wants to go out and party on mdma but I haven't figured out how to get him to do that yet.

Also an odd thing that happened was that all the skeles were really tired, so Gaster put Sans to bed, then I thought Asgore could do the same with Papyrus, but the interaction kept failing and getting cancelled, I didn't see why! Maybe he was too mad because he was too tired to let Asgore do it? I didn't know that could happen! I tried to get Gaster to get up and do it but he wouldn't, so in the end Papyrus crawled up the stairs and put himself to bed. Guys! Pull it together!

Anyway I'm having fun exploring the new stuff, I keep wanting to play but I should really take a break to do other things...
