This song came out in Britain in 1939. As Music Video Vault on YouTube tells it:
“The song is one of the most famous of the Second World War era, and resonated with soldiers going off to fight and their families and sweethearts.”
Queen Elizabeth II, who is old enough to remember that (she turns 94 on Tuesday), referenced the song in her speech to the British nation on April 5th, appealing to their sense of national unity in the face of the coronavirus pandemic.
Pink Floyd also referenced this song, in “Vera” (1979), which appears on “The Wall”, both the album and the film:
Roger Waters, the songwriter, was the son of a pacifist ambulance driver who later shed his pacifism only to die at the Battle of Anzio in Italy in 1944.
