LostFocus

Hi, I'm Dominik Schwind, friend of the internet. And this is my blog.

A couple of ways you can follow me around on the internet.

The prefered way would probably be with a feed reader - here is my RSS feed.

If you need more direct access, you can follow me here with Mastodon or similar sites: @dominik@nona.social. You can also follow this blog via @dominik@lostfocus.de.

A short (work) week – I had the Monday off and went to Basel for some shopping and lunch with my sister. Of course the Tuesday was very much a condensed Monday then, so that was great.

In other news – we finally got some rain, but that seemed to have been a short-lived blessing. I’m looking at the blue sky as we speak.

My media consumption this week was peak “middle-aged guy” – I binged all the Rick Beato interviews. (And by all I mean maybe six or seven. There are so many.) I also finally got BeamNG.drive – I don’t know why I waited that long. It’s good fun.

I like to geo-tag all my “stuff” so of course I also like to geo-tag my blog posts. I just wrote a tiny little plugin to do that.

I looked at a whole bunch of plugins, I used Simple Location for a while until I realized that all of them are doing way too much. All I need are two input fields for latitude and longitude and a button to get the browser location for convenience. And a way to save them in the (mostly forgotten) standard way to store Geodata. So that’s what this plugin does. It’s not the in the WordPress plugin repository because it’s mostly for myself, but it is on Codeberg because maybe someone else might need just these extremely basic functionality.

Just for the records: The first morning of the year on which I had to turn on the lamp at my desk when starting to work.

WebSub is one of those underrated technologies that quietly work in the background of the web and that I appreciate quite a bit. It’s not super hard to implement and at least in my experience it is super fast as well. (I think) WordPress has it by default, many of the feed-reading services use it as well and I often notice it when feeds don’t have it.

Update: WordPress doesn’t do it by default, there is a plugin. Thanks, Matthias!

Just like everyone else in this part of the world, I wanted to see the eclipse last Wednesday. Given that my living room windows face directly toward the sun around the time of the eclipse, I decided to just do that from home. Alas there is a tree in the way and all I saw was a sunset.
Turns out it was still a good decision: the big viewing point was overrun with people and when everybody wanted to leave, a pensioner (allegedly) mixed up the pedals in his car and ploughed right into a group of pedestrians. I could see the emergency services work late into the night.

For some reason I decided to bring a cake, so this morning I did a bit of baking. I haven’t done this in a long time and I clearly did not prepare well – I forgot that my mixer is broken and I didn’t buy milk. So I had to go on a little mission to find milk (which is harder than it sounds unless you’ve been to “stores are closed on Sunday” countries) and then did all the mixing by hand with a whisk. Oh boy. But now the cake is in the oven and it already smells quite nice. (But Dominik, isn’t milk a staple that you always have at home? No. No, it isn’t. I hardly ever have milk at home these days.)

I often wake up with a random song as an earworm – and now I note them down for your enjoyment.

This morning it was Go by The Chemical Brothers.

I started something on an impulse. I realised after a while that while it might be a great idea, it would be an even better idea as part of something already existing. Now I’m ignoring it altogether and for some reason started Captain of Industry again, which is really, really bad. It’s crack. I should delete it and sell my gaming PC.

Today I went up a (small) mountain and that was a very sweaty endeavour. And that was the week.

Another rather calm and warm week.
Workwise I’m currently working on a big task with a technology I haven’t used before, so this takes up a lot of my mental energy and struggling with all the weird little mistakes one does when not fully knowing something is surprisingly draining. I’m learning a lot, though, which is fun.

This week we had two trailers for big Cyberpunk TV series: Blade Runner 2099 and Neuromancer. On the one hand: cool! On the other hand: hm. Let’s see if it’s a good idea to look at the future the 80s foresaw through a late 2020s lens.

After the shenanigans of the last two weeks, this one is clearly one to recharge my social battery. I’m not sure if this is the reason but I also slept particularly bad. At least during the night. Daytime naps were just perfect but usually too short. And I think to celebrate those, I’ll take another one now.

I’ve noticed these signs of getting old in the last few days:

  • Weird technology mistakes: on Saturday I just wanted to add one of our family gatherings to my calendar on the iPhone. I typed “Family gathering” and the phone helpfully used all the information from an old family gathering, (2019!) copied them into the new entry – and then sent out an invitation everyone who was invited back then. At least it was the right side of the family and nobody was shunned since then, it would have been even more embarrassing.
  • Change feels like a personal attack: “my” grocery store has new fridges and they used that fact to reorganise the charcuterie and ice cream sections. I can’t find anything anymore! This is an outrage. Oh. And the section for cold drinks. Good god, what is the world coming to?
  • Young people these days: when I went to Munich last weekend, the young boys behind the hotel counter used “Du” with me. Listen up, you little punk with your thin blonde moustache and your weird 30s haircut – you’re still staff. Ehm. Sorry.
  • Unnecessary nostalgia: yesterday I was actually very blue about the twenty years since my first Tweet thing. And about the web we had, so full of hope and weird CSS hacks.
  • Forgetfulness: I know I had a fifth thing when I had the idea for this blog post this morning but now I can’t recall. (This one is a bit of a cop-out. I know for sure that this would have happened to me at any age.)

20 years ago I joined Twitter. I miss the old days of the internet.

It was the best of times, it was the wurst of times. The first two days of the week were being spend in Munich, a friend of mine had a stopover there and we planned to have dinner for a few months already. The time I wasn’t eating wurst with her, her friend and her brother, I spent at the amazing Deutsches Museum, marveling at all the old planes, trains and automobiles.
After a short work week, there was more wurst last night – my uncle invited friends and family to his hut in the middle of the forest for a little summer party and what a jolly time we had, as my slight headache this morning can attest.

A birthday, a funeral and a train journey that actually went just fine filled the week that was over faster than I could look around. Just like I mentioned last week, the current weather has a bigger effect on me than the one during the heat wave so everything has been a bit of a blur. I did do some touristy things on Sunday, which was nice, walked around, had a beer, as one does and that was that.

This morning it was I Can’t Stop Me by Twice and it is 100% because Instagram keeps showing me reels of that girl who screams along with it
