Happy Birthday Canada! The nation’s 159th birthday comes just days after Canada’s men’s team pulled off a 1-0 win over South Africa in the first knockout game of the World Cup, sending the team to the round of 16 for the first time ever. “True Canadian heroes,” wrote Prime Minister Mark Carney on social media, “What a game. What a team. What a country.” The lone goal came late in the match from Stephen Eustáquio, who later said it felt like everybody on the team took the shot with him. Soccer celebrations aside, there’s plenty more happening this Canada Day. July 1 is also when the Canada-U.S.-Mexico Agreement (aka CUSMA) officially comes up for mandatory review. A trilateral meeting is scheduled for July 1, though Canadian negotiators have been careful to frame the date as a checkpoint, not a hard deadline.
More July 1 news: PM Carney is expected to speak in Edmonton, the capital of Alberta, a province where the separatist movement has been gaining momentum. Last week, PM Carney told reporters Canada’s reputation as one of the world’s most trustworthy, reliable and desirable countries is on the line ahead of Alberta’s October referendum (where voters will decide whether to stay in Canada or trigger a binding referendum on separating from the country). Canada’s worth fighting for, he said, calling the vote a real referendum, not just a question about a question, and describing it as a dangerous bluff. Meanwhile, Opposition Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre says Albertans need to be given hope that life can become better in the country. July 1 is also Alberta’s deadline to deliver a proposal to Ottawa for a west coast pipeline. Ottawa will then have until October 1 to decide whether to designate it a project of national interest. This year, there’s a lot riding on this one holiday.

Fashion Freeze: Remember the Team Canada Fleece from Heated Rivalry? It sold out within minutes of launching last month, but one has been set aside for PM Carney. The catch? The head of the production company behind Heated Rivalry says he’s holding off on sending it until the future of Ottawa’s online streaming law is clear and enacted “for real.”
Project Picks: It’s been just over a year since the enactment of the Building Canada Act, promising to streamline federal approvals for major infrastructure projects of national importance. While the gov has yet to designate a project as such, it has just announced three frontrunners: two major roads in Nunavut and the Northwest Territories, and a nuclear waste facility in Ontario. Officials say the projects could be named projects of national interest by this fall. Stay tuned.
Truth Tested: More than 150,000 Indigenous children and youth were taken from their families and required to attend residential schools in Canada, also leading to the deaths of several thousand students. Yet these facts are increasingly being challenged as residential school denialism grows. A Nunavut senator and residential school survivor recently brought forward a motion to address the issue, but it was voted down. WHAT ELSE WE’RE NIBBLING ON
Finally, there is a plan to give 24 Sussex Drive a much-needed glow-up. Last week, PM Carney announced a national design-and-build competition, open to all Canadian firms, to rehabilitate and modernize 24 Sussex Drive, the PM’s official residence in Ottawa. Built in 1868, the house has suffered decades of deferred maintenance and neglect, and no PM has lived there for nearly 11 years. The winning proposal will be announced on Canada Day in 2027, while the Rideau Hall Foundation leads a national fundraising campaign for the project. “24 Sussex Drive will be built by Canadians for Canadians,” PM Carney said. After the announcement, members of the media got a behind-the-scenes tour; here’s what it looks like inside.
