When I wrote my book, The Pain Gap: How Sexism and Racism in Healthcare Kill Women (Simon & Schuster; 2021), people assumed I spotlight America’s maternal health crisis because I myself almost died giving birth in America.
But that’s not the whole story.
I focus so much on maternal mortality— then and now— because it’s an indicator for how well a country’s healthcare system is functioning, according to the World Health Organization (WHO).
In fact, American healthcare is needlessly and preventably killing women. But under the current administration, the country’s maternal mortality crisis has become a moral crisis.
And it’s pregnant women and children who are paying the highest price.
