Every few years, someone in a lab coat makes a claim, and the quote-tweeters go to work. This month it was Google Quantum AI, with a paper suggesting the number of qubits required to break Bitcoin’s cryptography has dropped roughly twentyfold. Days later, a Nobel-winning physicist who helped build Google’s machines told CoinDesk that Bitcoin could be among the first real-world targets for a cryptographically relevant quantum computer. Jefferies told clients to drop Bitcoin. Bernstein called it “credible but manageable.” Ark, bless them, came out swinging in Bitcoin’s defence. And so the feeds became, once again, a churn of doom and counter-doom.
On this week’s Antidote News, Andy and I tried to do something unfashionable: sit with the question for half an hour and talk it through like adults.
The first thing worth saying, and it cannot be said enough, is that Bitcoin mining is not the vulnerability. What’s theoretically at risk are the digital signatures that guard individual coins. In layman’s terms: a sufficiently powerful quantum computer might, eventually, reverse-engineer a private key from a public one. Reused addresses and legacy Satoshi-era coins are the most exposed. Good hygiene — a fresh address per transaction, as you should already be practising — mitigates much of the personal risk.
The second thing — and this is the part nobody on X wants to hear — is that if quantum gets to the point of breaking Bitcoin, it has long since broken your bank, your government, and your nuclear codes. The entire edifice of digital civilisation runs on the same handful of algorithms. Bitcoin is not unusually exposed. It may, in fact, be unusually well-defended, by virtue of being the most scrutinised open-source project on earth, with a global bench of cryptographers already working on migration paths. NIST has been running a competition for years to crown a post-quantum encryption standard; lattice-based schemes are the leading candidates; the winner will, in time, be absorbed into Bitcoin Core with the deliberate, ossified care for which the protocol is rightly famous.
Which brings us to the real attack surface: not the hardware, which remains miles behind the theory, but the narrative. If you were malicious and wanted to damage Bitcoin, you wouldn’t build a quantum computer. You’d manufacture panic. You’d push people towards untested solutions, rushed forks, hasty migrations to half-baked algorithms.
Our take, for what it’s worth: this is not an existential crisis. It is, at worst, an engineering problem with a multi-year runway. At best, a distraction dressed up as urgency. The correct posture is the one Bitcoin always rewards — pay attention, read, don’t opine on cryptography if you’re not a cryptographer, and ignore the equity analysts getting their Bitcoin takes from the internet and writing their sell-side reports between bites of a Pret sandwich.
