Eleanor Rigby Jones, known as 'E.R.', had been in a train accident that left her in a coma for three months. During those three months, she dreams of an entity she calls the crystalline ellipse, an awareness that continually manifests (dreams) the cosmos into existence moment-to-moment (an idea base on string theory). The surface ER can see is covered in countless clusters of crystals that are light reflective (like mica crystals), and she learns each individual crystal represents a an individual, but in truth, the individual is only a tiny aspect of the crystalline ellipse itself: a singular, infinitely vast mind trying to keep the light—the Intelligence that is the source of life—from its domain of space, time and matter. In the coma-dream, she notices the crystal representing her is becoming translucent and she sees another individual reflected back to her, not her image but she knows the individual as herself. She intuits it’s another lifetime she is living—not a past life but one she is presently living—her clothes demonstrating it must be happening in the late 19th century.
ER wants to uncover the truth that the universe is a false world created to hide from the source of life but the crystalline ellipse leads her towards madness: her awareness of her lifetime as Eleanor Rigby Jones becomes blended with other lifetimes and she cannot tell which is the real one, if any. She now understands if she is ever to emerge from her multi-life existence with her sanity intact, she must seek the lifetime where her greatest guilt exists and then, if located, find a way to forgive herself.
The book is 90% complete (a chapter and a half left to go). The book is based on the protagonist living multiple lives and I am trying to make sure the threads of each tie into the conclusion. I’ve written many short stories (both re-writes and new material) to help me understand the best ending—there are several and I would like to include a few of them without lessening the impact of the conclusion. A bit of a challenge.
