Anthony Esolen · Word & Song by Anthony Esolen

From all the fine responses we’ve gotten for our week focusing on the family, I’m guessing that you will enjoy this piece I wrote for the excellent Touchstone Magazine twenty years ago. I was often a lonely kid at school, but in the summer it was impossible for me to be lonely, because there were my cousins all around. Heck — we even knew a lot of our cousins’ cousins we weren’t related to, and we knew who was whose cousins among the kids in the neighborhood and the town. I am deeply grateful to God for my cousins, though I don’t see them very often now.
