I’ve talked for years about sharing more of the journey and released CrashDash has finally nudged me into hitting publish. Western Australia’s crashes just went live last week, and it felt like the right moment to pull back the curtain on what CrowdLab is building.
A quick recap of CrashDash and CrowdLab
CrowdLab is the umbrella brand that grew out of my original civic tech practice, CrowdSpot. Where CrowdSpot focused on engagement tools, CrowdLab is the evolution: a home for purpose-built, data-driven products that help cities make better decisions. CrashDash is our first product release.
CrashDash is Australia’s first national crash map. Right now you can explore Victorian, New South Wales, Queensland, and Western Australia data in one place, with South Australia on deck for next week. Councils, transport planners, and anyone curious about safer streets can jump in for free and find the hotspots that matter.

What you’ll get from this newsletter
I’m aiming for a relaxed monthly cadence, with a few timely posts during big launches. You can expect:
product progress across CrowdLab: CrashDash, future rebuild of CrowdSpot, plus new tools emerging from experiments
data exploration and strategy insights: how we translate state datasets into usable products, methodology breakdowns, and coverage milestones
human-centered AI ideas: where machine learning and civic design intersect, and how we’re applying those principles in the products we ship

Then, as we hit PR week, you’ll see “Road Safety Insights from Australia’s First National Crash Map,” highlighting trends across the national dataset.
