When Party Became Identity, Division Became Profitable, and “We the People” Forgot Who We Were
America is full of people claiming they are awake. They say they see through propaganda, distrust government, question the media, recognize corruption, and cannot be manipulated. Then ask them which political party they belong to. Suddenly, the free thinker becomes a defense attorney for a political machine.
If you are truly awake, prove it by questioning your own side as aggressively as you question the opposition. Corruption does not become honorable because your party commits it. Propaganda does not become truth because your favorite network broadcasts it. Foreign influence does not become acceptable because it helps your candidate. A lie does not become truth because admitting you believed it would bruise your pride.
America was not founded on “We the Republicans” or “We the Democrats.” The Constitution begins with We the People. Yet millions have allowed political parties to become identities. Once that happens, politicians no longer need to earn your loyalty. They already own your vote through fear of the other side.
DIVISION PAYS
Look at what Americans are encouraged to fight about. Left against right. Republican against Democrat. Black against white. Rural against urban. Religious against secular. Citizen against immigrant. Working class against working class.
While ordinary Americans tear each other apart, powerful interests follow something much more useful.
Money.
Campaign contributions, lobbying, government contracts, corporate influence, political access, foreign influence, consulting deals, media revenue, political action committees, nonprofits, and the revolving door between government and private industry all deserve scrutiny.
Not every contribution is corruption. Not every lobbyist is buying somebody. But stop acting as though asking who benefits is somehow inappropriate.
Follow the money. Follow the access. Follow the relationships. Follow the contracts. Follow the promises. Follow who enters government, who leaves government, and who suddenly receives a lucrative position afterward.
Then ask the question Washington hates.
Who got richer while you got angrier?
Americans watch money move like a pipeline while accountability crawls through government with an eyedropper. Three months pass. Six months pass. Years pass. We hear the same tired lines. The matter is under review. The investigation is ongoing. Officials cannot comment.
Funny how quickly Washington can spend your money and how slowly it can explain what happened to it.
FOREIGN INFLUENCE IS REAL
Foreign governments attempt to influence America. China, Russia, Iran, and other governments have been publicly identified by American authorities in connection with espionage, cyber operations, influence campaigns, covert activities, or attempts to manipulate American opinion.
China deserves intense scrutiny because it is an economic, technological, military, and intelligence competitor. But if we are going to demand truth, then we must practice it too. Saying China owns politicians in every state requires evidence that publicly proves that specific claim.
We do not need exaggeration. What has already been documented should be enough to make Americans demand answers.
Show us the relationships. Show us legally disclosable foreign linked money. Show us the meetings. Show us the gifts. Show us the investments. Show us the contracts. Show us the lobbying. Show us who has access and what they wanted in return.
If evidence shows somebody illegally acted for a foreign government, investigate and prosecute the conduct regardless of party.
Republican? Investigate it.
Democrat? Investigate it.
Independent? Investigate it.
Stop protecting jerseys.
America does not belong to foreign governments.
DUAL CITIZENSHIP AND CONFLICTS
Dual citizenship alone does not prove treason, espionage, corruption, or disloyalty. Pretending otherwise replaces investigation with accusation.
The serious issue is conflict of interest.
If you exercise significant governmental power, Americans have every right to demand compliance with disclosure laws concerning relevant foreign financial interests, substantial investments, certain gifts and debts, business relationships, foreign government relationships, and other legally recognized conflicts.
The standard should not change according to which country is involved. China, Israel, Russia, Ukraine, Saudi Arabia, Britain, Mexico, or anywhere else. Apply the same standard.
Do not ask where somebody’s grandparents came from.
Ask something considerably more important.
Does any foreign government or outside interest possess improper financial, political, or personal leverage over an American official’s decisions?
If the law requires disclosure, disclose it. If there is a genuine conflict, address it. If somebody secretly serves another government’s interests in violation of American law, prosecute it.
That is accountability.
POLITICIANS HAVE ONE MOUTH AND TWO FACES
American politics has turned hypocrisy into an art form.
When the other president exercises power, it is tyranny. When your president does it, it is leadership. When investigators target the opposition, everybody screams, “Follow the evidence!” When investigators approach their own side, suddenly the investigation is persecution.
The other party’s spending is reckless. Your party’s spending is necessary. Their politician’s lie is disqualifying. Your politician’s lie requires context.
Enough.
If an action is wrong when a Democrat does it, it is wrong when a Republican does it. If an action is unconstitutional when a Republican does it, it does not magically become constitutional when a Democrat does it.
A principle that changes when the jersey changes is not a principle.
It is fandom.
ANGER BECAME AN INDUSTRY
Journalism matters. Investigative reporters have exposed genuine corruption and government misconduct throughout American history.
But modern media also lives inside an attention economy.
Ratings mean money. Clicks mean money. Subscriptions mean money. Engagement means money.
And anger gets engagement.
Fear gets engagement.
Hatred gets engagement.
Social media made the formula even more powerful. Algorithms learned exactly what keeps people staring at screens.
Tell Americans that a complicated policy requires careful examination and many will scroll past it. Tell them somebody is coming for their country, children, freedom, identity, religion, or way of life and suddenly they cannot look away.
Congratulations. You have converted fear into revenue.
People can spend hours consuming outrage and mistake the experience for education.
It is not the same thing.
Information helps you understand reality.
Propaganda teaches you whom to hate.
HOLLYWOOD DOES NOT GOVERN AMERICA
Actors, musicians, athletes, entertainers, and influencers have every right to political opinions.
They also have exactly the same obligation as everyone else to support those opinions with facts.
Fame is not expertise.
Winning an Oscar does not make somebody an economist. Selling millions of records does not make somebody a constitutional scholar. Having fifty million followers does not make somebody an intelligence analyst.
Stop outsourcing your thinking to famous people.
And conservatives do not get an exemption. If you ridicule Hollywood celebrities for preaching politics and then blindly believe celebrities who agree with you, congratulations. You did not escape celebrity politics.
You just changed celebrities.
WHEN CHURCHES START WEARING PARTY COLORS
Politics has invaded institutions that should possess enough moral backbone to challenge political power.
That includes churches.
A church cannot preach one morality when Democrats govern and another when Republicans govern. A pastor should not discover that dishonesty is suddenly acceptable because the politician telling the lie promises favorable policies.
No politician deserves worship.
No politician deserves exemption from moral scrutiny.
When believers rewrite their standards to accommodate a politician, politics has not become holy.
The church has become political.
LOOK AT THE AMERICANS WE WALK PAST
This is where all the slogans become insulting.
Americans sleep on sidewalks. Veterans struggle. Families face food insecurity. People suffering severe mental illness cycle through streets, shelters, emergency rooms, and jails. Working people watch housing, groceries, insurance, medical expenses, and basic necessities swallow their paychecks.
Then Washington asks those same Americans to fight each other over which party supposedly cares more.
Immigration belongs in this conversation too.
A serious country should be intelligent enough to understand two things at once. Human beings should be treated humanely. America also has the right to enforce its immigration laws and control its borders.
Citizens have every right to ask how taxpayer resources are allocated. They have every right to ask why vulnerable Americans remain underserved. They have every right to demand functioning immigration courts, lawful enforcement, secure borders, and humane treatment.
Asking those questions does not automatically make someone hateful. Caring about migrants does not automatically make someone anti American either.
Stop turning every disagreement into proof that the other person is evil.
That mentality is destroying the possibility of rational government.
STOP USING THE MILITARY AS A POLITICAL PROP
Members of the American military swear an oath to support and defend the Constitution.
They are not campaign decorations.
Support them when Republicans control Washington. Support them when Democrats control Washington. Care about veterans after the parade ends. Care after the campaign commercial disappears. Care after the cameras leave.
If your patriotism disappears when election season ends, it was never patriotism.
It was marketing.
THREE WORDS POLITICS CANNOT STAND
“I was wrong.”
Try saying it.
Maybe your favorite network misled you. Maybe your favorite politician lied. Maybe something you shared was false. Maybe an accusation you believed collapsed when evidence appeared. Maybe something you dismissed turned out to deserve investigation.
Maybe somebody you hate politically did something right.
Maybe somebody you love politically did something wrong.
That is life.
Changing your mind when better evidence appears is not weakness. Refusing to change your mind because your ego cannot handle being wrong is weakness.
Political machines understand this. They know that once politics becomes identity, admitting you were deceived feels like admitting something is wrong with you.
So people double down.
They defend what they once condemned.
They ignore what they once demanded be investigated.
They move the goalposts.
Anything except saying, “I was wrong.”
That is how manipulation survives exposure.
“WAKE UP” DOES NOT MEAN JOIN ANOTHER HERD
This may be the biggest joke in modern politics.
Someone screams, “Wake up!”
What they frequently mean is, “Stop believing their propaganda and start believing mine.”
That is not awakening.
That is recruitment.
If you are actually awake, nobody gets automatic trust. Not Republicans. Not Democrats. Not presidents. Not Congress. Not intelligence agencies. Not corporations. Not churches. Not unions. Not billionaires. Not activists. Not television networks. Not Hollywood. Not influencers.
Nobody.
Evidence first.
Especially when the evidence hurts your own side.
COUNTRY OVER PARTY
America does not need another generation trained to hate half the country.
We need citizens capable of looking at someone they strongly disagree with and remembering that person is still an American.
Think about how much political manipulation would collapse if politicians, corporations, media personalities, foreign influence operations, celebrities, and algorithms lost the ability to tell Americans whom they were required to hate today.
Ask harder questions. Follow documented money. Demand disclosure. Demand evidence. Investigate genuine foreign influence. Expose real conflicts of interest. Protect constitutional rights even when the person exercising them disgusts you.
Most importantly, hold the politician you voted for to a higher standard, not a lower one.
And whenever someone desperately wants you to hate your neighbor, ask the question that ruins the entire game.
Who benefits if I hate this person?
America’s danger is not disagreement. Free people disagree.
The danger comes when disagreement becomes hatred, hatred becomes identity, and identity becomes something politicians, corporations, foreign adversaries, and professional propagandists can manipulate for power and profit.
We were never promised one opinion.
We were given something better.
We the People.
Not red people. Not blue people. Not China’s people. Not Russia’s people. Not corporate America’s people. Not Washington’s people.
We the People.
So wake up.
But do not wake up just enough to join another herd.
Wake up enough to question the shepherd.
Truth over party. Evidence over propaganda. Constitution over personalities. Country over political tribe. The American people over anyone, foreign or domestic, who profits from tearing them apart.
