Thank you to Annie for hosting a class on the Villanelle. I had been experimenting with slight shifts in the A1, A2 refrains and slant rhymes, but after class I tried 'harnessing the power' of the repetition and clean end rhymes - here is what happened...
Roses at Sunrise
one-inch red-blue roses tossed over the grey fence rail
no apple phone to count my stride
morning begins a crimson eye, I watch her pinkness pale
open wide the day arrives a welcome piece of mail
yellow flashing finches flied
one-inch red-blue roses tossed over the grey fence rail
my qulit thrown back, a terrible dream, I could not find the trail
caucused crows just laughed and lied
morning begins a crimson eye, I watch her pinkness pale
into a cloudless sky brushed by the seagull's tail
my head a tilting whirling ride
one-inch red-blue roses tossed over the grey fence rail
where twenty-thousand blooms applaud the buzzed bees' wail
I stand and still is amplified
morning begins a crimson eye, I watch her pinkness pale
nothing to do nowhere to be no path no test no fail
cardinals whistle then they hide
one-inch red-blue roses tossed over the grey fence rail
morning begins a crimson eye, I watch her pinkness pale
Would love to see if any others captured the Villanelle!
thanks for giving a read - Emily B
