Most of us are aware that hundreds of thousands of American servicemen were stationed in England during World War II. Brits joked that they were “oversexed, overpaid, and over here.”
Lots of books have been written about this American invasion, mostly nostalgic reminiscences and popular history with cute stories. The big exception? Rich Relations, by distinguished British academic historian Dr. David Reynolds.
Dr. Reynolds, normally a scholar of high politics and diplomacy, is also a Brit with deep understanding of US culture. His wife is American, and he has spent much time in the States. He brought all this knowledge and experience to bear in this terrific book. Earlier this year, I set myself the task of giving a short talk about Dr. Reynolds’s book at the Mighty 8th Air Force Museum in Georgia. Now, I’m giving my talk again live online, as a Bonus for paid subscribers to Non-Boring History.
