Hello friends! Welcome to Something Extra for Something Italian. The French have a version of this phrase, lagniappe, which can be translated into Italian as omaggio, for something complimentary, piccolo regalo, meaning little gift, or pensierino, a small token or thoughtful gesture. As you’ll note below, I found a better phrase based in the literary world.
Working over the past six years putting this book together, many iterations never made it past the look of an editor or my own critical eye. Nor did some of my goals to find ways to bring my local Italian communities closer to one another. But I’m still trying.
I thought of my readers and guests at my tables over the years. How could I honor our reciprocal relationship? How could I honor the work that went into Something Italian?
To share in the bounty, Something Extra include “cuts,” little darlings they’re called in the literary world, or in Italian—piccoli tesori—which translates to small treasures. Ironically, tesoro is also a term of endearment for those we love, like a dear friend, an adorable niece, etc.
