I’ve written before that, in my house, Mother’s Day is often a twenty minute holiday.

As in the twenty minutes it takes me to eat the breakfast in bed lovingly prepared by my family.

But this year I stretched the holiday to a full twenty-four hours as I set aside all my devices and steadfastly refused to check a newsfeed of any kind.

It was lovely.

There’s a thing called “discretionary income”.

Growing up, this was not a thing.

Not in our house, anyway.

All income was spoken for. Sometimes three times over.

So my mother can be forgiven for trying to do everything possible to stretch a dollar.

The shampoo thing might have worked.

Had we properly cooperated…
