What I Hope to Accomplish With It

My name is Anne Phillips. I have a Bachelors in Latin and Greek from Hillsdale College (‘17), and a doctorate in Classical Studies from the University of California, Santa Barbara where I specialized in ancient Greek historiography, but most particularly Herodotus.

I currently teach for the House of Humane Letters where I am a Latin and Greek instructor.

I am but a humble lover of Latin and Greek; I stand on the shoulders of giants far greater than I can ever dream of being, and I will be happy if I can but sit in their shadow and listen to them for the rest of my life.

My first love was and always will be the languages; I love reading and writing in them, and I love the classical canon deeply. My primary goal as a classicist is to share the beauty and depth that I see in Latin and Greek as languages and as a body of literature. I hope to encourage young students to become better than I am in their studies, and see my role as a teacher not as a gatekeeper of knowledge or a guru, but a signpost and a guide pointing to something far outside of ourselves and far greater than we are.

By the grace of God, I have been able to make my love of these languages my career and Deo volente I will for many years yet.

I started this Substack because after many years of study (which still do not seem like enough), I have thoughts that others want to read, and so now I write them and present them to you, reader, as my research and as my plea for the great adventure of classical literature.

With that, I hope that this Substack is a source of knowledge and enjoyment and increased appreciation for ancient authors and ancient ideas.
