Beloveds,
I guess TLC called it when they cautioned against chasing waterfalls. Still, I’m a bit hard-headed and I do love a mission. So last week for my birthday, I drove up the mountain where five years earlier I had, with my then-beloved, encountered a magical waterfall.
By intuition and memory, I navigated right to the spot where, on the side of a mountain, I had to park and walk the rest of the way. Two turkey vultures had swooped over me earlier which I took as a good sign that I was on the right path.
Nature is an oracle that speaks in metaphor. She helps us to make meaning out of this wackadoodle thing we call life.
And there at the crossroads I turned right and started climbing. And climbing. And sweating and climbing. In the opposite direction of the waterfall. Up, up, up to the top of this mountain. A mountain that years earlier had been shaded with ponderosa pines and mixed conifers and was now covered in burnt standing matchsticks. This mountain was aflame in 2022 when my life imploded. It was the largest wildfire in New Mexico history and it was devastating.
I told myself I was on a mission of reclamation. To close a cycle, to bring part of my past to completion. I also really wanted to see that cascading water, look for dragonflies and commune with Spirit.
But as I stood on that mountain, completely alone, surveying the present I realized that I was trying to go home again. And duh, I know this 1000% (because I’ve tried so many times) - you can never go home again.

Because what you thought was home in reality probably wasn’t home. Because you have changed. Everything has changed. And you can never go back. Ever. (And this is actually a very good thing.)
Each one of us has an evolutionary impulse towards growth, healing and the completion of developmental processes. This is what true healing and integration actually is. The acorn cannot (nor would it wish to) do anything other than become an oak tree.
So when you’re trying to “go home again” you are actually trying to complete something so your psyche/soul can move on to the next milestone.
In order to self-actualize, you actually NEED to close these loops but most of the time we’re trying to do it unconsciously. That’s why we end up marrying our parents, for instance. The sparks fly and it’s usually because we unconsciously recognize in the other a potential path to completion. (Sometimes we call this trauma-bonding.)
Too bad we’re not typically conscious of it until it’s gone too far and we realize the mistakes we’ve made. And sadly, some folks never learn this and are stuck attracting the same kinds of relationships and experiences again and again.
These same processes are at play at the level of the collective. We can’t naively go back to a time when things were simpler, more honest, more reliable. We cannot unsee what we have seen and will soon see. There’s no going back to some mythical more perfect society.
And that’s okay, too. Because it’s actually what we are here to create. Something entirely new that is grounded in love and that furthers humanity, rather than destroying it. This is the great potential of our time - to create society anew, to replace extractive systems of devastation with new systems that actually serve us.

Sure, the waterfall is still in that mountain. And I’ll probably make my way back there again. But it will never be as I remember it, because, well, FIRE. And because I’m so different now, too. Older and a bit wiser, even if I’m still chasing waterfalls now and again.
Fire destroys, but like the turkey vulture, it also purifies. And what feels like devastation or apocalypse makes way for new growth, new vibrance, new ideas and pure possibility.
I share more deeply about all of this in today’s Shamanigans. Give it a listen, share with a pal, and see if you’re chasing any waterfalls of your own. ;)
The Spirit notes in today’s episode:
Nature is the oracle who speaks to you in metaphor
My trip back to the past (chasing waterfalls), through the flames, trying to re-find magic but finding something else entirely
How your evolutionary impulse towards growth, healing and completion of developmental processes/loops works behind the scenes
Parts of us are always trying to go home again; why there’s no there there
These same evolutionary patterns can be seen at the level of the collective as well, and yep, no there there
Ceremony is one way you CAN go home again
This one sacred relationship will sustain you in these fiery times
Following your own evolutionary path will be exciting at times, terrifying at others but rewarding in the long run. I promise! If you need support navigating your unique path, this great awakening or your own dark night of the soul, let’s talk. We are not meant to do any of this alone.

P.S. If you can swing, it, come to Santa Fe for a half-day women's retreat on 7/11 with my sister from another mister, renegade evolutionary astrologer for Surrender to Your Revolutionary Rebirth. We'll help you create that nourishing space you need so you can actually hear the evolutionary pull of your soul.
P.P.S. water is sacred (get your feet wet)
In today’s video, I shared about blessing your water. As Meister Eckhart said: If the only prayer you ever say in your entire life is thank you, that would be enough.
Thank your water. When you sip it, bathe in it, get your feet wet in it. Take this one from the Tunes. Even in the desert there is water, which will help you navigate these very fiery times.
And remember: You are divinely created and thus, you have the power to bless. So as you go out into the world, be a blessing. Go in love. Go in gratitude. Go as the creator you are.
