After years of national anticipation of the 250th celebration of the Declaration of Independence and based on studious reflection of that historic time, the reality of this country’s present anguishing condition has cast a pall over any celebratory remembrances we might have of our inspiring founding promises. This poem grew from that realization.

We muddled through
our 250th sickened
by a draining swamp
that reflects our dismal
armada of presidential ideas
as military action fireworks
exploded in the skies
above another country’s
terrified schoolchildren
while at home indignant
pseudo-patriots
murder young mothers
and innocent fathers
then lie to protect
each other’s pasts
as the rest of us
pray that firefighters
and true Americans
can keep this country
safe from lightning strikes
and crazed cowards
intent on burning it all down.
Oh, say, can you see?
