Weird how we're already approaching mid-summer, but it somehow feels like it's only just begun? Anyways, I thought this might be a good time to do a monthly favourites and go through what's been serving me most so far.
Wearing
From a style perspective, I've been keeping things especially simple this summer. Maybe it's because of the heat, but I've been paring back more than ever: great tanks, a lot of cotton, good shirting, woven and canvas bags, flip flops (though it’s probably time for me to find a new shoe to fixate on)... that's more or less been the uniform. In case you missed last week's send, it's a pretty accurate representation of what I've been wearing.
Woven Bags: 9 times out of 10 I’m wearing a woven bag out to dinner. I love the way they impart a more effortless, summery feel that my city wardrobe doesn't naturally have. So far, the bags that have been getting the most mileage: an older black woven bag from St. Agni (near identical alternative here), this brown flat tote, a garden-y woven basket bag, and this capacious raffia number I bought last year (smaller version is a bit more reasonably sized).
Herline Tote: I cannot resist a canvas tote; there are simply no two ways about it. At this point I consider myself a collector. Earlier this summer I picked up this one from Front General Store in Brooklyn and it’s since become my daily driver. I'm seeing tons pop up on The RealReal in all sorts of colours too.
Hillie Tank: Meet my new favourite cotton tank. There’s something about the scoop neck and thicker strap that makes it feel slightly more refined. It also happens to be the ideal shape for perfectly concealing a bra.
Jersey Simple Crop Pant: I was drawn to this jersey cotton pant the moment I laid eyes on it, but knew I’d never be able to justify the price, so I went looking for an alternative, and found the perfect one. I wear them at least twice a week—they've become my default for working from home and running around the neighbourhood.
Susan Button-Up Shirt: As you may already know, I am a huge fan of a button-up and consider it a staple for every season, but particularly in summer when 1) we have fewer layering options and 2) we're constantly moving between the sweltering outdoors and blasting AC. I picked up this shirt earlier this month and it instantly cracked top five in my wardrobe. It's got the perfect stripe, and the silk is really beautiful but not overly precious, and very lightweight.
Coto Pima Cotton Cardigan: Speaking of moving between temperature extremes, a wrap cardigan is another perfect piece to easily throw on at home or shed before running out the door. No word of a lie, I put this one on nearly every day— the pima cotton makes a great fabric for a summer sweater, it's very soft, and feels like something Diane Keaton might have worn in Something's Gotta Give in the best way.
June Mules: If I do happen to make it out of my flip flops, I've been wearing these instead. A satin element is a low-lift way to dress up a look, but because they're a mule, they still feel easy and summery. A beautiful, special shoe. I think I feel a satin kick coming on!
Beauty
Blush Blush and More Blush: Excluding brow gel, I think blush has officially become the MVP of my makeup bag. It brings a little life back to my face with minimal effort and, because I'm dealing with scarring (the joys of acne-prone skin) and trying to keep my face out of the sun, it's helping me fake the sun-kissed glow I'm craving. In June, I tried two new launches—the fine-tip Blush Stylus and this powder Blonzer—and they're both incredible. They're also from two brands I blindly trust at this point. If you're in the market for either a cream or powder blush, I can't recommend them enough. I wear shades Sienna and Nue, respectively.
Clay Masks: Between the heat, sunscreen, and generally spending more time outdoors, my skin can easily start to feel more congested this time of year. I'm using a clay mask once a week as a bit of a reset, and it truly works wonders. It helps draw out impurities without stripping, and I genuinely feel like I wake up with smoother, softer skin. I've been using a sample I brought home from a facial, but this clay mask has been a go-to of mine for years. I love that it's super gentle.
Body Serums: One of the best pieces of beauty advice I’ve ever been given is to play with body care when you’re bored instead of messing with your skincare. I’ve enjoyed testing different body serums lately, and this one from Lilis is my current favourite. It’s hydrating, brightening and smoothing—lovely for summer!
Home
Percale Sheet Set: I don't think I can quite convey how amazing these sheets are. I've always been a percale girl, but this set in particular is incredibly cool, fresh and crisp, while still being so soft— feels exactly like getting into bed at a lux hotel. We have this linen bedspread draped on top too; if you also have a dog, it's the move!
Pienza Tall Glasses: I’ve had these glasses for a few years now and absolutely love them. They’re particularly top of mind because they’re my glass of choice for the drinks I tend to reserve for summer. I’m not sure what the science is, but none of them taste quite as good when they’re not in this glass. My only warning is that they’re delicate and hand wash only, but to me they’re worth it.
Hanaka Matcha: Speaking of matcha, I’m back on a kick—as I usually am every summer, when I can have it my preferred way: iced. I ordered this one towards the beginning of the month and can confidently say it's my favourite matcha I've found for making at home. The tasting notes are cocoa, toasted nuts and cream, and it’s suuuper smooth. I just placed an order for more.
Wishing you all a lovely July. More soon xx
