Enrolments for Cohort 3 of The Portfolio Career Build Method close in four days and there are only a handful of spots left. If you want to build a financially lucrative portfolio of work that also stirs your soul, this is for you. Just a heads up that I won’t be running this program again until mid-2027, so now’s the time to join.
Eva K was just 3 months into fun-employment when she came into my world, or rather, when my writing floated across the internet into hers.
At the time, she was slowly emerging from burnout after years of working as a Learning Designer and was itching to get back in the game. Like most people on sabbatical, she’d burned through a more-than-comfortable chunk of her emergency fund so needed to earn cash, but she wanted to do it differently. Eva dreamed of a multidimensional career centred around her 3 passions: Learning Design (what her mind loves), yoga teaching (what her body loves) and music (what her soul loves). But when it came to actually doing the thing she had literally no idea where to start.
So Eva enrolled in Cohort 2 of The Portfolio Career Build Method to try and figure it out. I didn’t know this at the time but she’d put a lot on the line to be there, cashing out crypto so she could sign up and later telling me “I was watching Ether plummet day after day until I just decided I believed in myself more than I believed in crypto. I chose to see [the Build Method] as a reinvestment in myself. This was the message I sent to my friend Steve”.
I instantly saw Eva’s sparkling potential and her pathway towards monetisation AND creative self-expression, and it didn’t involve niching down (why build another cage?) or doing everything at once (this inevitably leads to failure, feeling shitty about yourself and coming to the false conclusion that this way of working just isn’t for you).
Instead, it involved strategic sequencing, smart positioning, and leading with one vertical while letting the others follow, not fall.
After much discussion and deliberation, Eva decided to lead with her core skillset while letting yoga and music become second priority. This was a big shift as a serial over-committer with the tendency to get distracted by big! shiny! objects! She felt relieved knowing that there was a way to pursue everything, just at different volumes
She positioned herself confidently as a Learning Designer helping coaching companies turn live courses into self-paced and blended experiences. She increased her rates to better reflect her value and a Trojan Horse offer followed, which created an ‘in’ with new clients that she could later on-sell and up-sell
She implemented a weekly operating rhythm that reduced the friction of pitching herself and began religiously following my sales ritual: sending 2-5 outreach emails per week, booking 2-3 discovery calls per week, following up thoughtfully and establishing a pipeline review habit
She started showing up on LinkedIn and Substack despite her previous posting paralysis of wondering “What will others think? What if I look stupid or desperate? I have nothing to say! Nobody is interested!” (I’m sure you can relate)
The online world became her playground; somewhere to experiment, follow the breadcrumbs and explore ideas, formats and topics
Eva went from 1 to 4 clients in under 2 months by deploying what she learned in The Portfolio Career Build Method, and has already converted deals totalling 3/4 of her previous full-time salary and we’re just 6 months into the year
One Substack essay, that wasn’t even about learning design mind you, helped convert a client who’d been deliberating on her proposal (she signed 3 hours later)
She rebranded her yoga classes to ‘moving meditation’ after conducting market research with her students (a strategy she learned in The Build Method) and now talks about her classes in a way that resonates more strongly with her client base
As a result of putting herself out there, Eva connected with a musician who’s putting her in touch with radio stations so she can promote her upcoming album (a lesson in telling anyone and everyone about what you do)
She improved her life! And mood! Eva said, “I’m doing what I love and what I’m good at, my week is full but not overwhelming, and I’ve designed a structured but not rigid way of moving across my fields of interest. I can’t remember the last time I’ve consistently been in a good mood for so long!”
Eva is yet more proof that building a vibrant portfolio career doesn’t have to mean niching down or amputating part of who you are (ouch). But, like her, you need to get strategic and then ACT. There’s an art to recognising opportunities for what they are and aren’t, analysing the trade-offs and ruthlessly prioritising based on where your time and effort will pay off. But you need to commit to the process. Stay in the mental game. Put yourself out there. Invest in your future.
That’s how you create a life where mind, body and soul align.
