It’s honestly just part of the job…and I’m not mad at it. Producers talk over coffee. We pitch over coffee. We debrief, strategize, sometimes just survive — over coffee. And somewhere along the way, I started thinking: why not record these?
So that’s what AOP Cafecito is. A new short-form series where I grab a coffee with someone fascinating, turn on the mic, and let you in on the conversation. It’s the kind of quick hit real that happens over a latte
Special shoutout to our friends at Civil Coffee for hosting us!
And for our first ever Cafecito, I brought in someone I met at the Rise Literary event I attended here in LA a few months ago — Hillary Povar, EVP and Chief Creative Officer at Smith House Strategy.
Hillary has spent 20+ years at the intersection of entertainment and culture, contributing to hundreds of campaigns. She’s most known for her work on Schitt’s Creek (Rest in Power, Queen Catherine!) in helping it go from a small comedy to a full-blown cultural behemoth that broke Emmy records and set the world on fire.
We talked about:
What PR actually is (and why it is nothing like Samantha from Sex and the City)
Why bad press is not, in fact, always good pres
What filmmakers get wrong when they come looking for a publicist
The Timothée Chalamet ballet situation and what a smart publicist actually does in a moment like that
How AI is impacting e PR world (her answer might surprise you)
This episode is exclusive to Substack. It’s truly the cafecito vibe: intimate, conversational, just for us here.
Keep creating, keep hustling. And as always, thanks for doing this life thing with me!
