I’m veering from my typical Wednesday noon post to share a special edition of Words & Wanderings. Also atypically, this is not a bookstore, per se, but for three exciting days each year, Episcopal Church of the Good Shepherd Used Book Sale is the hottest bookish event in Southwest Louisiana. This much anticipated annual sale has been a fixture on the Lake Charles event calendar since 2008. Prior to that, it was a happening sponsored by Temple Sinai, though I do not know when they started the tradition. But it is definitely a destination! No one could tell me even approximately how many people attend the three-day event. But there was a line waiting at the door before the 8:00 am opening Friday morning and within minutes, the gym was full of hundreds of bibliophiles perusing 25,000-some books across all genres, plus jigsaw puzzles and music CDs. Books, etc. for the sale are donated by the community throughout the year. It’s tough for bookworms to leave without a bagful, or three, of books. Ask me how I know!

Proceeds from the sale benefit several local non-profit organizations, which can vary from year to year. This year’s recipient roster includes Care Help Sulphur – Backpack Blessings, Dawanna’s Closet Food for Thought Program, Sleep in Heavenly Peace Sulphur, Holy Ground Homeless Outreach, Good Shepherd Brown Bag Program, and Reins of Hope at LaBocage.
