Introverts know . . . fitting in with church and finding ways to serve can be a challenge. In this series, my goal is to inspire others, through my own experiences, to be creative in finding opportunities that suit their unique personality. Introverts tend to be avid readers. Naturally, avid readers tend to gravitate to libraries. This introvert is no exception. As a child, my rural elementary school had an afterthought of a library, but it was my favorite room in the building. At the small church my family attended, there was a library the size of an old-school closet, yet every Sunday after the service, I’d go there and look for a book I hadn’t already read.
Fast forward four or so decades. After moving to Louisiana and settling into a church, I was pleased to find a nice library in the building with an impressive collection of books. But I quickly realized, this literary treasure trove was being neglected. Overlooked. Underutilized.
I pronounced myself the church librarian and made it my mission to encourage church members to take advantage of the library. I added books to the shelves to keep it interesting, and for years I wrote a column called “Library Corner” for the monthly church newsletter, where I featured both old and new books that might interest both adults and children.
Eventually, our diminishing congregation had to downsize and we built a new facility that better suited our needs. Alas, our new location didn’t have space for a library. So our plan now is to open a “little free library” along the road in front of our church.
