Hi everyone,
I wanted to share a quick reminder about how subscription renewals work, and touch on a situation similar to one I explained recently to help avoid issues down the road. (If you missed my previous post about this, please take a moment to read back over it!)
If you plan to cancel your subscription, please make sure to do so before your next renewal date. *You have to cancel subscriptions through a web browser.
Payment processors like Stripe charge non-refundable processing fees as soon as a payment goes through. If a payment processes and a refund is requested afterward, those transaction fees aren’t returned to me, meaning every late refund costs me money out of pocket.
If you ever run into a problem or forget to cancel on time, please reach out to me directly first so we can work it out together instead of opening a dispute with your bank (which incurs steep penalty fees for small creators).
Thank you so much for your support and understanding!
Dear Readers,
I’m writing because of a recent situation that has been deeply painful. A current paid subscriber — someone who even sent me a supportive message in the past — missed the deadline to cancel their Substack subscription and then disputed the $90 renewal as “fraud.” While I completely understand that sometimes someone may need to cancel, I should not have to pay the price for their own mistake.
For over five years, I have been producing content, helping people, and sharing knowledge mostly without financial reward, aside from a handful of subscriptions and donations. I spend countless hours researching, writing, and exposing difficult truths, even when it comes at personal cost.

Subscriptions offer some support, but they don’t sustain me. A dispute which would never occur if someone simply cancelled on time inflicts real damage:
Funds are pulled from my account
Stripe penalizes my work
Fees pile up
The stress is overwhelming!
I’ve already survived more than enough stress for one lifetime; adding more feels like it could genuinely push my body beyond its limit.
My paid subscriber base is small, and some subscriptions are gifts, so the real number is even smaller. Every subscription matters.
Each dispute doesn’t just impact finances — it threatens my ability to keep doing the work I do and the people I serve.
If you ever need to cancel, please do so before the renewal date or contact me directly! It makes a real difference and prevents unnecessary harm.
