Ariel held Justine’s arm as the women gathered bubbling over with excitement.
“Shh let’s. not bring too much attention to our gathering.
“Martine you said we would meet in the field today. Why on earth are we meeting at this temp agency for catering services?”
The big catering companies hire extra help from these agencies for the big events sponsored by political entities and decision-makers. Some of you are going to get hired to work tonight while the richest PAC members talk with powerful tech folks coming to overhaul the whole system.
“Won’t they be concerned about our passing security clearance checks?”
“You already have passed those requirements. Meggie is a tech wizard. She left an amazing career in development at a major firm where the men always talked over her and took credit for her work.
She was so happy to work part-time and keep hidden her incredible hacking skills while working as a low-level computer technician in the Federal building at the suggestion of Martine.
“Meggie made sure all of you had the right profiles for working in sensitive areas. She may have erased a couple of speeding tickets and photos of Maxine in revealing outfits, but you all check out.”
So what are we supposed to do once we get inside?
Now look, I know that some of you have had important careers and probably attended lots of events like this one, but taking on the work of servers and clean-up crew will get you access and information…lots of it.
Marsha Benson earned a Ph.D. in biochemistry. She never thought she would be putting on the uniform of a cleaning crew for a large catering company. She took a moment to view herself in the mirror that the hiring agent held up. It set her back for a moment, but then she rallied to the task and opportunity to be in the midst of the most powerful people in the country.
People ignore the servers, the cleaning staff, and the food preparers. Fewer still paid attention to the women serving coffee at high-powered meetings or emptying waste bins late at night.
She could hear Martine’s instructions in her head:
“Keep low, keep your phone on silent but ready to record. Remember your invisibility is your superpower.”
