I went into Soul Hunter expecting a straightforward sci-fi thriller, but what I got was something far more psychological and unsettling, in a good way.
Drew Briney crafts a story that lives inside the mind, quite literally. The premise alone is gripping … Vaya Sage, still reeling from a black market brain scan, slowly realizes he’s entangled in a deadly mental chess match. From the start, the tension feels intimate and claustrophobic, because the battlefield isn’t physical space, it’s consciousness itself.
What stood out to me most was the perspective. Experiencing much of the story through Darkmind’s viewpoint was both fascinating and disturbing. Briney doesn’t write him as a one-dimensional villain; instead, we see fragments of previous lives, memories bleeding into one another, and the calculated detachment of someone who sees bodies as temporary shelters. The memory sequences from prior hosts were some of my favorite parts, they added depth while raising questions about identity, agency, and what it really means to “self.”
Vaya Sage’s internal struggle felt just as compelling. His hesitation about confronting Darkmind, knowing the risk of mental enslavement, is written with believable fear and moral weight. I found myself constantly questioning what I would do in his place. The stakes feel personal rather than abstract. If he acts, he could lose himself. If he doesn’t, everything he’s fought for could collapse. That dilemma drives the suspense more effectively than any physical showdown could.
The black market brain scan element adds a gritty cyberpunk edge to the narrative. It creates a believable entry point into the mind-bending events and gives the story a slightly dystopian undertone without overwhelming the plot. Briney keeps the pacing tight; the story never drags, even during introspective passages. …
Overall, Soul Hunter is a cerebral thriller that blends science fiction with psychological suspense. It explores identity, control, and survival in a way that lingers after the final page. If you enjoy mind games, morally complex antagonists, and high-stakes internal conflict, this one is worth the read.
