One part gift guide, one part walk down memory lane, all in celebration of motherhood in every form. To the moms and mother figures reading right now, thank you for inspiring us every day—and feel free to forward this to your loved ones, in case they need a little hint…
XO, VSB (Mom of three) & VMB (Mom of five)
Before we get started, we understand Mother’s Day can look, mean and feel different for everyone. If it’s a difficult day for you, know that we’re thinking of you, and sending our love.
1. A few pieces of advice that have guided us through this wild ride that we call motherhood…
The days are long and years are short.
Unconditional love wins the race, and you get what you give.
Keep an eye out, your kids will surprise and inspire you every day.
Having kids teaches you the depth of love you have to give; it’s truly bottomless.
2. Everyone should read Pia Baroncini’s beautiful piece about raising her daughter, Carmela. A deeply personal, deeply moving story. Bring tissues.
3. Three moms with great style: Kelly Klein, Laurel Pantin, and Harling Ross—all worth a follow on Substack.
4. HiNote (an app founded by VSB’s sister!) is the modern answer to sending a Mother’s Day card, via text. The perfect way to say I’m thinking about you, and I wanted to make you laugh. Don’t be surprised when it pops up all over your mom group chats on Sunday.
5. And for all the handwritten card devotees, we’re obsessed with the Mad Libs-style “Everything Card” from No Particular Order by the fabulous Margot Lee. P.S. We collaborated on a special-edition Mother’s Day card, available in very limited supply with any purchase in select VB stores this Saturday, find more details on our Instagram.
6. The surprise and delight gift: A bedazzled version of one of her favorite things. Our sparkling Scrabble Board is a big conversation piece at VB HQ right now, and it got us thinking about other things we could add a little shine to. There’s lots of inspo to be found on Etsy—how fun is this can of Diet Coke and tube of Aquaphor?
7. The handmade gift: The artists at Underwater Weaving Studio curated a gorgeous edit of baskets of all shapes and sizes, plus weaving kits (for the mom who loves to craft).
8. The sweetest gift: It’s a tradition in our family to give goodie bags of homemade chocolates from Laurie’s Candies for every holiday, Mother’s Day included.
9. The gift to treat yourself to: We’ve said it before, and we’ll say it again, every mom deserves a vibration plate (our lymphatic drainage fixation continues).
10. The tried and true gift: A beautiful floral arrangement. We take flowers SERIOUSLY at VB, and our office is always filled with fresh blooms, often from one of these amazing NYC florists: Zeze Flowers, West Village Flower, Popup Florist. We also love the idea of gifting a beautiful vase filled with fresh spring flowers—the farmer’s market is full of lily of the valley, gardenias and sweet peas right now.
11. How VSB is spending Mother’s Day this year: I love to be at home with my kids, just relaxing. We’ll have brunch and go out on the boat—my perfect day.
12. VMB’s best Mother’s Day memory: I became a mom for the first time on May 3rd, 2002, about a week before Mother’s Day. You never forget that first pregnancy, delivery and baby. It’s my most vivid memory, and the best Mother’s Day gift I’ve ever gotten.
