I was originally planning on writing a blurb about why I love being competitive and what it means to me. Alas, it’s been a busy month and I’m behind so I’m reverting to a joyful blurb about May.
May was one of those months we call “best”. I mean it.
It kicked off with a half-marathon that I spontaneously signed up for. I hit my half-marathon goal that I set two years prior. More importantly, the race was a reminder that process trumps goal. It’s ironic that I was furthest from my goal when I focused on it but I smashed my goal once I focused on my routine.
The race reminded me to embrace the suck, and especially embrace the spontaneity. I’ve been pretty obsessed with structure and routine for the last few months and felt like the race was a good reminder of what good planning affords. Planning is invaluable but plans are useless.
Speaking of spontaneity, I decided to catch the aurora right when I was about to go to bed and overheard that it could be visible. I surrendered my consistent bedtime and saw the most ordinary night sky ever. Luckily, my iPhone camera believed otherwise and it caught a few beautiful views. Adventure is always one spontaneous moment away from any given moment.
May was also when one of my best friends got married in Hawaii. There is something supernatural about “being in Hawaii”. Once it hit me, all worries and anxieties went to sleep and I believed that everything was going to work out. Maybe it’s manifestation (or maybe it’s the power of friendship), but it ended up being such a highlight to see my friend get married. Tears were shed, dance floors were stomped, and great moments were created.
The month capped off with a surreal last minute concert by Fred Again and Skrillex in San Francisco’s Civic Center Plaza. I ran 18 miles that morning followed by immersing myself into the most vibrant San Francisco crowd I’ve ever seen. The joy of the crowd was infectious given how unique the event was and how entertaining the performers were. The city of San Francisco shined bright that night and it gave us all hope that this event wasn’t the last of its kind.
It feels a lot easier to navigate spontaneity when you’re aware of your limits and boundaries from past uncomfortable experiences. I’ve gotten a better grip of them over the years and that self-awareness paid dividends in May. It makes me feel excited for the future. The anxiety of approaching the unknown without knowing if a personal line is crossed can be a reason to never try again. I’m glad I leaned into discovering more environments as well as shifting into “screw it” mode in May. It’s uncomfortable. Looking back on the many mini leaps of faith in May, no regrets were felt and I see them each as an exciting mini adventure.
Other highlights throughout the month:
Wholesome hike with the best homie
Spontaneous (my favorite kind!) post-run Arsicault bakery for brunch
Spontaneously (the most fun kind!) hosted a great group of Canadian interns at my place that I had just met
Brought an Arsicault bakery hall for the office
Inventing a mega handshake with my coworkers
Big kudos to you for making it through. Hope to catch you soon :)
