Growing from seed for me has to be easy, otherwise it doesn’t warrant the effort and time needed. The combination of dancing, floral jobs and keeping what’s already at the field alive - especially during heatwave after heatwave - can make me feel slightly ridiculous to be thinking of creating more plants to look after, but one of things I love about gardening and growing is that there’s always the next season, and using what I’ve learnt from the season before and adapting as we go is such a joy. Sowing seeds for the coming year always fills me with such hope - the promise of new plants in a small brown envelope, either collected from the field, a fellow growers coveted plant, or a speciality seed grower or nursery. Over the years, I’ve thankfully managed to trim down the purchasing (Will would argue that it’s still on the excessive side…if only he could see the basket before it’s trimmed down!) as I’m afraid to admit the volume of waste has been staggering - old seed packets sat unused in boxes, over sowing and ending up with more plants than I could take care of, seedlings dying due to lack of time to keep on top of watering…all very useful things to bring ones ambition in to check!
What’s worth sowing is different for everyone, so for me, a packet of seed has to fit a few bits of criteria before it ends up being purchased.
