The bulk of my art mazes are halftone mazes, where the thickness of the walls is modulated such that the maze as a whole, when viewed from a distance or at small scale, renders a tonal image. And for many of these halftone mazes, I tend to use wallpaper mazes as their basis.
A panel maze (which is what I call a maze that is limited to a finite area) has the advantage that we can make it a ‘perfect maze’ (with no loops or isolated areas). But what I like most about a wallpaper maze is that I can make it slanted (which is an aesthetic preference of mine) but still have it fill a (usually rectangular) canvas right up to the edges.

The Knot Maze is an early example of such a halftone maze based on a wallpaper maze. Of course, the final art maze is no longer a wallpaper (ie it doesn’t seamlessly repeat any more), nor is it a ‘perfect maze’ as a whole. So you can’t enter the maze at any point you like but need to start from one of the two small markers and find your way to the other one. Enjoy!
