In Art As In Life

In comedy (the greatest art form, imo), “commit to the bit” is an expression that encourages performers to see a joke through, no matter how unhinged the improv gets. In my world of voice acting, the phrase is repurposed to encourage fully embracing a character or method, often going beyond your comfort zone to give a bigger, more exaggerated take. It’s an invitation to push past the familiar and to stretch the limits of your imagination.

At every table read or workshop I’ve attended, the breakthrough after someone commits is palpable: it’s as though they are illuminated by conviction. As a spectator, you’re noticeably struck by the invisible force behind belief. Belief that you can never be ‘too much.’ Belief that it’s a safe space to try.

After leaving a full-time role late last year, I found myself free of client-driven due dates for the first time since 2020. I – finally – had the freedom of open-ended exploration. Without defined deadlines, I could spend hours researching and reviewing and reflecting to make exactly the right decisions. Or so I thought.

What actually surfaced was the contrast between committing to a direction versus waffling in indecision. Choices suddenly seemed endless: everything from household priorities (which room to deep clean and purge first) to casual hobbies (hiking or ceramics or gardening or something else entirely). What would otherwise be simple undertakings fell into spirals of analysis paralysis, stuck in abstract conceptualization.

My monkey mind became haunted by potentiality: these dormant what ifs and grandiose visions that needed action to activate belief. This immobility became a perceptible energy suck, not unlike the feeling after doomscrolling on a beautiful summer day. It was a spiraling cycle of lethargy, frustration and overwhelm, leading to self-doubt and isolation.

Inspired by my fellow voice actors and encouraged by my therapist, I’ve begun to adapt ‘commit to the bit’ across the minutia of everyday life. Except it’s not always about going bigger or harder. Sometimes it’s about just making a decision, any decision, and seeing it through.

“A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.” – Dao De Jing

This revived newsletter is one of those steps: a commitment to writing, to creating and to releasing.

I hope you’ll join me and commit to the bit in the second half of this year. If you do, I’d love to hear what it is and if there’s anything I can do to support you in that commitment.

With love and gratitude,

沈鑫 // Em Shen
