Google has made several tweaks to the Pixel Launcher search experience in recent months. The most notable change is that pressing Enter opens the highlighted app instead of performing a web search. Despite all these improvements, the Pixel Launcher's search still does not offer a unified search experience. Google has fixed this problem on the Pixel 11.
On the Pixel 10 and older models, the Pixel Launcher can only search through your Contacts, Play Store, Settings, Wallet, and Clock. On the Pixel 11, it can search through Drive, Files by Google, Messages, Photos, Gmail, Calendar, and Pixel Screenshots. Keep is the only notable Google app missing from the list, which would have made the upgraded search tool even better.
If you have multiple Google accounts, you can specify which account you would like to search through. There's even work profile support.
This upgrade makes the Pixel Launcher’s search a powerful tool for daily use. You can immediately search for a specific email or RCS conversation using the search bar instead of first opening the relevant app and then searching for it.
Pixel 11 isn't the only phone getting better search
Interestingly, Droid Life reports that the same search experience is available on the Galaxy Z Fold 8 and Fold 8 Ultra as well. The feature appeared after an update to the Pixel Search connector, which only appears on the Pixel 11 family and Samsung's newest foldables.
The lack of a unified search experience on Android has been a long-standing problem. So, it's good to see that Google is finally getting around to fixing it. The addition brings a Spotlight-like search tool to Pixels. You can start searching for the information you need without worrying about whether it’s in Gmail, Messages, Photos, or Calendar.
Unfortunately, the unified search tool is only available through the Pixel Launcher's app drawer, and not the home screen. The search bar on the home screen still opens Google Search or AI mode.
Since the upgraded Pixel Launcher search experience is also available on non-Pixel devices, Google should ultimately expand its availability to older Pixels. There is no reason why the company would keep this unified search experience exclusive to select devices.
