Start Here: Why Places Matter

If you’re new to Lost in Place—and to me, a longtime writer for National Geographic Travel—welcome.

I write about destinations before they become content. Overlooked cities. Hotels as portals into place. I try to find the deeper meanings hiding beneath modern travel. In an age of increasingly standardized tourism, I’m drawn to places that still feel rooted, surprising, unmistakably themselves.

A few good places to begin:

Travel is often sold as consumption—a checklist, a ranking, a bucket list. I’m more interested in what a destination can teach us about ourselves, and why some places still resist becoming a bag of cultural Doritos: endlessly packaged, posted, instantly consumed, and forgotten on the departing flight.
