My wife organized a beach glass crafting event and asked me to write a poem to share with the participants.

Once you were an elegant carafe, Full of spirits, hopes, and dreams. Now dashed against hard stone. A once resolute vessel shattered! Your jagged edges are like shards of glass, With sharps that prick and wound, Maiming those you love. Life rejects you, throws you into the waves, Tossing overboard the refuse, then rives: The sea foam chokes, the swells upend, The storms tumble, roll, and spin. Life is as kind as the storms at sea. Yet the storms of life are what makes you Anew! If you yield. Dulling your sharps, Smoothing your edges, softening your features. Closing wounds, and healing what wounded. Fixing the fractures with friction, Humbling you to shine. After a time, waves toss you to shore Laying you bare for the world to see. There lost as dead sea glass in the sand, And from myriads of pebbles and rocks The Artist finds you! The Artist picks you! Up for his own joy and delight. Joins you to his favorite finds: A collection of others once broken, Whom the waves too had tossed, Weathering the storms of life; To place you all within a mosaic: Broken pieces mended to be whole; Color and light and bonded with love; A masterpiece of broken souls made one; For the Artist’s grand mosaic of life.
How different would you be if you had not experienced the storms of life?
