We were gearing up for the cold.
It was May, our first real encounter in a long time with a Melbourne winter, and my wife, Katherine Cameron, and I were flying south with our two-year-old son, who’d never known a temperature that didn’t require sunscreen.
The forecast was dismal: drizzle, wind, the usual “four seasons in one day.”
So we packed layers and our regular good humour, just in case.
Amazingly, when we landed, the skies were clear, and they stayed that way. Mornings were misty, the coffee tasted extra good, and the afternoons carried that low, golden light that flatters everything.
It was perfect.
The wedding, in true Melbourne fashion, was a great party, laughter cutting through the cold, a bit of AFL banter, wine that stayed chilled without help, a dance off or two.
Only later did we learn our hosts hadn’t left the weather to luck. They’d planned the entire weekend using the Wurundjeri seasonal calendar, not the European one.
Seven distinct seasons, not four.
As urban planners, they’d been working with local stakeholders on the topic, and clearly, it paid off.
We happened to be in Waring, the wombat season, a time of clear days and cool nights, when fog gathers in valleys, wombats emerge from their burrows, and male bulen-bulen (lyrebirds) begin to display their songs and spectacular tail feathers.
The weather matched perfectly, a system of knowledge refined over millennia. And I had never been more eager to also confirm the wombats and lyrebirds had indeed followed the forecast.
This precision, despite changing climate, has stayed with me, a reminder that the Wurundjeri calendar isn’t folklore but applied meteorology: a living model built from observation, feedback, and time, centuries before Francis Bacon formalised the scientific method.
A fantastic reminder that wisdom often hides in plain sight, across the world.

Five months later (yesterday morning), back in Singapore, I was reading the announcement of the 2025 Nobel Prize in Economic Sciences, awarded to Joel Mokyr, Philippe Aghion, and Peter Howitt.
Their research explores how innovation happens, and how it stalls. Mokyr’s work, in particular, draws a crucial distinction between two kinds of knowledge:
Prescriptive: theory, science, codified rules;
Propositional: practical know-how, adaptation, lived experience.
Civilisations accelerate, he argues, when these two learn to speak, when theory meets craft, and science meets soil.
And when you think about it, that’s exactly what Indigenous knowledge systems have done for thousands of years.
Across Australia and beyond, First Nations peoples have honed what economists might call applied science, observing, testing, and refining their relationship with local ecosystems. Their data sets are rainfall, bird migrations, soil texture, materials, stars and sky colour. When new tools arrive, drones, satellites, sensors, they become ideal collaborators, not competitors.

It’s in this synergy, between the prescriptive and the propositional, that the engine of innovation truly turns. And understanding how to turn it well is what Mokyr calls mechanical competence.

Mokyr describes mechanical competence as the practical intelligence that turns theory into technique.
In modern systems, that’s often the missing piece. We generate science and frameworks faster than we learn how to apply them.
This is where Indigenous practice, and regenerative thinking more broadly, show their depth: they design for usefulness.
As the United Nations Development Programme wrote this year, Indigenous and local communities are “crucial in the fight against climate change” because they “bridge global knowledge with local application.”
They turn prescription into practice. They ground the ideas and adapt them to context and place.

The authors describe regeneration as one that replaces top-down planning with bottom-up dialogue.
Regeneration, they argue, depends on reciprocity, on recognising knowledge as relationship, and not a resource or recipient.
In that light, “regenerative” becomes less about carbon or certification and more about authentic connection.
A marine biologist modelling reef recovery learns as much from a Torres Strait fisher as from a satellite. Even better when they all talk.
Each interaction strengthens the system’s intelligence, when it stays connected and ready for change.

This is what Aghion and Howitt coin “creative destruction” at its healthiest: not competition between old and new, but conversation, ushering out the obsolete to make space for what’s next.

When governments sideline local voices, when industries lobby against change, when misinformation corrodes trust, we don’t just lose fairness. We lose information and efficiency within the system.
The feedback loop breaks, and we pay for it in the long-term.
Openness, by contrast, compounds.
Each act of shared learning, between scientists and stewards, technologists and traditional custodians, tightens the circuit. Knowledge circulates, systems adapt, resilience grows, and, as the Nobel work reminds us, so does prosperity.

As Nin observed, we see as we are, the challenge is to expand who the “we” includes.
To remember we are a part of nature on this blue dot.
Progress doesn’t come from knowing more; it comes from sharing better.

When I think back to that weekend in Melbourne, I remember small details: my son’s breath fogging in the cold; magpies warbling; the terrified look on my wife’s face when the pilot announced it was six degrees outside.
We’d braced for rain and instead had an amazing few days with friends and family in perfect weather, eating, drinking, laughing around town.
It wasn’t magic. It was because we had friends who took the time to use local wisdom, and trusted it with their wedding day.
And there’s a clear correlation with what the Nobel committee celebrated this year: the value of connecting the prescriptive and the practical, the global and the local, the analytic and the ancestral, the thinkers and the doers.
That, to me, is what regenerative thinking really means. It’s a way of seeing systems as conversations, a recognition that wisdom flows in every direction, and that progress, when it’s honest, begins from the ground up.
And maybe we didn’t need to pack so many clothes.
