Acharei Mos Shnei Bnei Aharon

The parsha opens: “Vayedaber Hashem el Moshe acharei mot shnei bnei Aharon.” Hashem spoke to Moshe after the death of Aharon’s two sons.
But the timing is puzzling. Nadav and Avihu died back in Parshas Shmini. Since then we’ve had Tazria and Metzora over 150 pesukim.
So why now? Why acharei mot?
I think I heard an answer this past week, listening to Rachel Goldberg-Polin on 60 Minutes and on Call Me Back with Dan Senor.
It wasn’t something she said directly. It was the way she spoke. The way she carried herself.
She described writing her book as a way of sharing her pain with others, of giving Hersh’s life more meaning through that sharing.
And suddenly, the pasuk opened.
Acharei mot is not a timestamp. It is a state.
For a bereaved parent, there is no “after.” Every moment is lived acharei mot. The loss does not recede into the past, it becomes the lens through which everything else is seen.
She didn’t answer the question.
But listening to her and being moved by her, trying to understand the weight she carries, the answer came through her.
Aharon, too, lives the rest of his life acharei mot shnei banav.
The Torah is simply sharing this truth.
