The American Dream is dead. It was on clearance in 2008, but now it’s officially dead.
Flatlined. Gone.
Your hopes, dreams, and ambitions?
You gotta tone that down.
You want:
a good paying job
a family
a dog named Skip
a Toyota Sienna XLE with the upgraded moonroof
But no. You aren’t getting that.
Instead, we have a late-stage consumerist hellscape with a side of pharmaceutical dependency. That’s the new Americana.
Gone are the days of Lunchables and Saturday morning Curious George.
What you’re now getting are $12 Boba smoothies, an anime roommate who can’t even find Japan on a map, and drive-thrus where unhappy workers feed you food that’s half sodium and half poison.
Soon you’ll be living in a cookie-cutter corporate suburb with a community manager named Trent.
And no, it’s not your house. You’re renting it from a subsidiary of BlackRock. Every time he stops by, Trent refers to your child as “it” and invoices you a $20 pet fee
And look — your kid is a furry. You get it. Still... it's a little rude.
But rudeness is the least of your problems. You own nothing.
Your car? You're financing a 2016 Kia Soul at 10% interest through JPMorgan. By the time it’s paid off, it’ll qualify for Medicare.
Your phone? You’re leasing it through Klarna at $70 a month. Miss a payment and a Tibetan ninja will show up to your Blackrock house with a katana and a heart full of vengeance.
Your couch? Not yours either. It’s technically owned by Wayfair and 1/16th of a hedge fund in Estonia. While you’re paying off the couch, the Estonian hedge fund manager Viktor is having an extramarital affair with his secretary Svetlana on his yacht off the coast of Amalfi.
When you wake up in the morning, you have no motivation to do anything.
You feel like a 9-year-old kid staring at his Wii Mii family the day after the divorce. Just watching them... standing there... still together playing Tennis waiting for the serve.
In reality, Dad is drinking a 12-pack of Natural Lights in a Days Inn and Mom is selling healing crystals on Etsy.
You take a blue pill that makes you feel a little better so you have the courage to deal with your child who now has a fur tail and hisses at the neighborhood cat. You can’t question it. That’s totally normal behavior.
But hey — Raven likes school.
They made a few friends:
- Cleo, an OnlyFans creator who specializes in eating drywall
- LilZyrtec, a Twitch streamer who refills vape cartridges with Nyquil
- And Filipo — he once stabbed another kid over a V-Bucks deal gone bad. (It was LilZyrtec. RIP, the world wasn’t ready for you yet, little bro.)
After dropping Raven off at the public cesspool to become communist, you make the brave march to Starbucks.
Behind the counter, a goth Yale grad is on her 5th Lexapro of the morning— still holding on, barely— like a K-Mart employee in the early 2000s.
She’s making your coffee with one hand, angrily tweeting about nuclear families with the other, and quietly crying into the oat milk container.
But that’s fine. You’re not one of those liberals who drinks fake milk.
You’re a man.
You go straight to the source. You walk right up to that cow, latch onto the udder like a leech, and start slurping raw unpasteurized milk straight from the tap.
You make eye contact with the farmer. It’s RFK. He doesn't stop you. He just nods. Because he knows.
You finally get to the job you hate that barely pays you.
Everyone around you is depressed and on some sort of drug The only thing keeping them going is Adderall and lunch break Mango Cart beers. Your coworker Kevin? He OD’d in the office kitchen again. This time, his limp body blocked the snack cabinet.
Now no one can get to the stale Cheez-Its or that one expired Nature Valley bar that crumbles harder than Grinder’s servers during an RNC convention.
After alerting your boss of the third OD this week, he nodded and put an “Out of Order” sign on Kevin.
You log onto your computer and spend 30 minutes on the NYT daily puzzle failing to find a five-letter word for hope.
Then you survive four Zoom meetings. Everyone’s smiling, nodding, pretending to care. It’s like a team-building retreat hosted by Meghan Markle— polished on the surface, but emotionally built on deception and the soul of her latest victim.
At that point? You’ve earned your escape.
You leave the office defeated, like a hooker exiting the pew of a Texas megachurch.
When it’s all over, you go to Chipotle.
The worker looks at you and asks: "What protein?" You say: "Chicken."
He gives you a pathetic portion of chicken and soon goes mute. His eyes glaze over. He flatlines and collapses. There’s no bother trying to save him as his United Healthcare policy was somewhat limited in coverage.
Next up is the cashier who’s watching an Instagram livestream of two people sword fight on the L train. He mumbles: "Fifteen dollars."
The screen lights up: "Would you like to leave a tip? 15%. 20%. 25%.”
You click 25%
Not out of kindness, but out of fear. Fear that the flatlined worker’s ghost might make his way into your JPMorgan Kia Soul.
You swipe your card. It declines.
So you put the $15 bowl on Klarna. "Four easy payments," you whisper to yourself.
No interest. Only shame.
You get home. Raven’s back from school.
You’re relieved they weren’t a victim in a shooting but also disappointed, because that means you still have to parent your furry child, who now identifies as a cockatoo and only speaks in screeches (alas, this is normal behavior and you mustn’t question it).
But one day — if you're lucky — you'll finally escape.
Not through enlightenment. Not through growth.
You’ll escape the only way anyone gets out now: by becoming an overnight influencer like Hawk Tuah Girl and peddling imaginary coins to amphetamine goblins on Reddit.
That’s your exit strategy.
So long as your $6 Venmo from 2019 labeled “drugs” doesn’t get flagged by the IRS, or if you accidentally get deported to El Salvador due to a systemwide homeland security glitch.
Only then will you finally afford a 3-bedroom townhome outside of LA… before it either gets burnt down or bought by a Saudi conglomerate. If the latter occurs, it will likely get turned into an Airbnb for Coachella fans to microdose psilocybin at.
And until then?
Keep smiling.
Keep paying $15 for a Chipotle bowl with one molecule of chicken.
Keep pretending it’s normal your child growls at other students in school.
Keep leasing your Guacamole through Klarna.
All you have left is Severance on Apple TV+.
The American Dream is dead.
Not with a bang, but with the quiet whimper of a Klarna notification — reminding you there are three payments left — on your burrito from April.
