Since 2009, I’ve been doing these special shows called Gezelligheid. They were meant to be a reaction to shows where the persona of the performer is the focus. An attempt to disperse that attention through the acoustic and visual and expand into more long-form, spontaneous pieces, where the listener can zone out and let the music wash over them. That held for the first few years until I felt I was indulging a bit too much with a 20 minute Barn Tapes odyssey. Now, Gezelligheid shows have become whatever I’m into that year, and increasingly it turns into some jamming with whoever opens the shows (one recent highlight was Margaret Glaspy and Julian Lage). Gezelligheid = freedom.
This year, since I’ll be playing two nights with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra in November… for the first time in many years, I have decided to skip Gezelligheid to spend more time with my family this holiday season. To assuage the guilt I feel for skipping this year after a good long run, we are sharing the full-show performances of Gezelligheids past here with our Ahem! pals. We hope this helps hold you over ‘til 2027.
We’ll be sharing performances from over the years over the next several months. To kick us off, here’s the full concert from 2013, featuring special guest Tift Merritt.
We’ll see you in 2027 back at Fourth Presbyterian… and in the meantime, here on Ahem! and November 13 + 14 with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra.
