Last weekend, a quick trip to Black Mountain, North Carolina, brought me to a Water Ceremony hosted by my dear friend, Kari Taylor. It was a gift to be there and share today’s poem with the community.

Water has been working on and with me most of this life. Its generosity calls me into the rivers of and beyond time. So, today, I offer you a poem or mantra about its gifts from the new collection, This Wild Arising.

Be the water, become the water.

These words carried me through the last two and a half years. While editing the new collection, it dawned on me there was no poem that held them.

A simple mantra, as close as my breath, gave rise to the wild; words that buoyed me and carried the poetry into form. The words are simple enough. Yet they work you deeper than anything else I’ve found.

Be the water
Become the water
‘tis the way through
Be the water
Become the water
Nothing left of you
Be the water
Become the water
No questions now
Be the water

You know how
