We like to believe we see people as they are. But Most Of The Time, We Don’t.
We see others through our own emotional history, fears, unmet needs, and unfinished business.
Read that again. It’s alot for those that haven’t heard this before.
Every interaction we have is filtered through what we have lived, what we have avoided, and what we still carry. So when you look at someone and think things like;
“They’re difficult.”
“They’re selfish.”
“They’re unreliable.”
“They’re draining.”
We gotta learn to stop, pause and reassess because part of what you are seeing may be true.
And part of it may be you.
Why Certain People Get Under Your Skin
Some people pass through your life without any impact whatsoever. They calm you, uplift you and keep you grounded and happy. Keep hold of those people!
Others can stay in your head, trigger you, upset you and leave you unsettled.
Those people are rarely random. They are universal messengers come to awaken something in you. Mostly something unresolved.
Old wounds and fears. Abandonment, not being enough, not being seen, being taken for granted...
These people do not create those feelings. They reveal them.
Projection and Protection
When something inside us feels unsafe, we protect it at any cost. Often through judgement.
We label and criticise others. We distance ourselves and complain or gossip because we need to feel in control.
Our unprocessed emotions don’t disappear. They look for somewhere to land.
And more often than not, they land on other people.
Ask yourself these questions;
If I trusted myself more…
If I valued myself more…
If I honoured my boundaries…
If I believed I was enough…
Would I still accept this dynamic?
Would I still chase this approval?
Would I still stay silent?
Would I still over-give?
Would I still tolerate this?
The answer to some, if not all, is probably no, and that tells you where the work is.
Relationships as Feedback
Every relationship gives you information. How you relate, communicate, protect yourself, and abandon yourself.
How you love.
When we stay focused on proving the other person wrong, we miss this vital information.
And so we repeat patterns until we choose to learn otherwise.
What “Doing the Work” Actually Means
Nobody is perfect. And we are not meant to be. But we can be honest.
If we notice where we avoid difficult conversations or ignore our intuition, we can be honest with ourselves and not betray ourselves.
We owe that to ourselves.
We have to learn how to regulate emotions instead of outsourcing them. Which often means sitting with discomfort instead of escaping it, and above all, learning to choose yourself above all else.
When You Change, Everything Changes
As we grow, our relationships shift, and our life becomes richer. Life becomes simpler. We stop negotiating our worth, stop explaining basic boundaries and stop chasing what cannot meet us.
Seeing People Clearly
When you are grounded in yourself, you see others more accurately. You recognise who can meet you where you are and who can’t. You see bad behaviour and don’t need to call it out.
No bitterness or drama. Just truth.
Remember this. People come into your life to reflect something you needed to see. Once you have seen it, their role is complete.
Be grateful and move on.
