Christian Nationalists: Your Taxes Are God's Money

This WCN group is proposing to release at least 25% of the $4 billion available for unhoused federal assistance to faith-based groups. It is the largest tranche of federal funding for homelessness.

The regime has also changed the rules for qualification. Previously, applicants had to have a “housing first” mandate, meaning they provided housing first before qualifying for other support.

But because many WCN religious groups don’t provide actual housing first, they’ve done away with the “housing first” requirement. Any WCN religious group can apply for these funds, whether or not they provide actual housing first and foremost to unhoused people.

Over and over and over, I warned Americans what these WCN purity tests would look like. Here’s how this WCN cash grab of AT LEAST ONE BILLION DOLLARS of taxpayer funds will be withheld from those who need it to enrich WCN groups.

It looks like this, in a WCN’s own words (from the newsletter What Does “Sin Is the Root Cause of Homelessness” Mean? above):

Weigand said he believes county-funded programs should come with accountability.

“What it looks like from a county funding perspective is to invest in initiatives that will hold people accountable to God’s standards …You can hold someone accountable while also meeting their needs,” he said. “And part of holding someone accountable is addressing their sin issues, if they have any. Not everyone is living in a situation that they created through their own sin, but some people are … If you are struggling with alcohol or drug abuse, let’s find you that assistance, let’s get you that physical need. Let’s also make sure that you’re accountable and not continuing to go down that path anymore.”

When Christian Nationalists use the word “accountability,” they always mean “forcing everyone in society to live by their interpretation of the Bible.”

And who should hold people accountable? Christian Nationalists, of course!

“That’s the model that I think works the best because the church individuals, people one on one, can determine the difference between someone that wants to continue to make poor decisions, and someone that doesn’t, someone that truly wants to turn their life around,” he said.

“If we’re going to physically give you help, we’re going to do a Bible study with you,” he said. “You don’t have to believe it, you can sit there and check the box. But we are going to because we believe that that’s the true solution. We’re also not going to turn someone away if they have a physical need. If you have a physical need, come on in. We just ask you sit through this Bible study. If you don’t want to listen, that’s fine.”

• Assistance is contingent upon attendance at church or chapel services, Bible studies, or other WCN religious gatherings. As an example, an Indiana man was kicked out of a shelter because his third shift employment interfered with attending required chapel services. The WCN purity test was more important than a paying job that might lead to him being able to afford his own housing.

• Participants must complete WCN religious assignments, including devotional journals, mandatory prayer time, and written reports on Bible stories and concepts. None of these private activities would be private or personal. Journals would be read by WCN staff. Prayers would be supervised. Reports would be graded. All to ensure that forced WCN religious indoctrination is “sticking” and provide correction. Those who require “too much correction” will be kicked out of these programs so as not to be a “bad influence” on those who remain.

• It is typical for WCNs to forbid dating, enforce strict curfews, monitor phone and internet usage, and police all personal effects. Any person who receives this kind of assistance has no right to privacy or to their own minds. They will cede those rights in exchange for help.

• Participants must meet with untrained “counselors” (who are usually WCN church members) for “therapy sessions.” Which are usually reading the Bible, citing what sin(s) caused the person to land in their situation, and praying over that sin. For mental health issues and addiction treatment, this is what would be provided. Relapses would mean ejection from the program.

• Women fleeing violence with children in tow may face additional hoops. They could be forced to sign over food stamps and comply with strict behavioral standards (like not using contraception and dressing “modestly”) for access to diapers, formula, and other supplies for their babies.

• Participants may be forced into free work for WCN organizations in exchange for a roof, a meal, and a bed. This is usually a good way for WCNs to gauge how their indoctrination is “sticking.” They put their charges in controlled situations and watch how they interface with “the world.” People who are desperate to stay off the street (where the Roberts Court has criminalized homelessness) will work harder to show their WCN bonafides.

• Attorneys and groups like the ACLU - file lawsuits against this violation of church-state separation.

• As we can see from what I predicted in 2024, elections have consequences. Convince every persuadable person to vote in the midterms.

• Do not vote for WCN candidates at any level of government.

• Form community support networks to provide compassionate care and support for those who are struggling. If communities are taking care of each other, people will not need to turn to religious groups.

• Find examples of people who have been turned away from these programs for failing WCN purity tests. If they have a discrimination case, encourage them to sue.

• Talk about this massive funding change with your connections. How do they feel about their taxes funding WCN religious groups? Especially when other community groups are short of food, supplies, beds, and funds?
