It was 2014ish? My friend and I were sitting on the bed in my NYC apartment and she (a virgo) decided she’d help me “purge my closet”. Shout out to you Nadia Aboulhosn (love you forever friend). Anyhoo - Nadia and I were going through my dresser drawers and I was resisting tossing random ugly t-shirts and things I called “pajamas”. She was being very strict with me (as I requested) and goes - “ok, you can keep 5 things.
Here’s a laugh, I literally never wear pajamas. Not to sleep at least. What I was holding onto was comfort. The soft easy things you throw on in the house that look like crap and also take up a ton of space in your wardrobe. Not only do these things take up space but they also crowd your cute clothes. All of that sorting through the bad to get to the good and even worse - reaching for the bad because comfort, when you’re “just running an errand”.
I decided then in my very brief toe into minimalism that the simple solution was to remove the ugly! In all forms. Keeping the crappy shorts to run to the bodega or the ratty stained tank top to lay around the house becomes the same ratty stained tank top you go grab the mail in or quickly run to the store in etc.
Since then, I try to only purchase things I want to be seen in. That might seem hard but it’s extremely simple.
For example, if you’re going to want to throw on a track or pajama style pant to grab coffee, why not these? I like to think of it as easy clothes as a category but always having some sort of point of view. A detail that implies style and care. I love the subtle ruffle and tie of the track pants and even thing a pajama style pant, these balloon pants are just cool and can be styled up or down. Honorable mention to a chic hoodie alternative.
The major points I think should be considered is what do you reach for and when? What is comfortable to you and at the end of the day, if its just a matter of putting an article of clothing over your head and walking out the door - why resist looking good if it’s that easy.
I’m a soft/stretch fabric girl when I think of comfort. I’m also thinking of ease. Does it feel easy, is it easy to put on and when I feel relaxed wearing it? Fusing, fixing, adjusting is totally out if I’m going to commit to this comfort and style can co-exist theory.
Over the head
When I think grab and go - over the head is my brains immediately yes. Over the head and out the door clothes can look like this. There are few things that float my boat more than a slubby v neck white tee. It pairs perfectly with literally everything. The cozy long sleeve is a slippery slope. Not only do I think these stripes are cool but the little ruffled seam is so intentional and gives “ok, she’s doing just fine.” I’m also a big fan of an easy pull on knit as a replacement for a cozy crewneck. It’s just a bit more finished but requires zero additional effort.

This might be controversial but a dress is just as easy to wear as anything else. I’ll argue that it’s even more simple because it’s very much one and done. You can style or not style and still look better than tossing on your old scuzzy “running errands” wear.
If a t-shirt, why not a mesh t-shirt?
Schlepping - groceries, laundry, the need for a random “shopping bag” - this is how to do it. This is one of my favorite silly little shopping bags I’ve seen in a while.

Step in
Not all bottoms are created equal and the simple fact is anything with an elastic waist is iconic comfort behavior. I’m a firm believer that if you have great personal style, you can make anything look cool but these have so much built in style that it’s really hard to get wrong and that is a major lazy girl/effortless style win.
Speaking of step in, and I’m extremely guilty here - there are so many shoes that you can slip on just as easily as you can a slide or Croc.

Those are my thoughts - a fail proof casual wardrobe makes life so much more simple and stylish. Now I just need to figure out how to execute this in 100 degree weather. Palm Springs is already on fire right now. Le’ sigh.
