I found this short essay I’d written a while ago, and thought some among you might find it interesting or helpful, especially those familiar with ancient coins or history — the question I’ll be looking to answer is “under what circumstances did Ephesus receive each of her four neokoroi?”
Today, we’re asking Classical Wisdom, a publication that aims to “promote and preserve the love of ancient history, philosophy, mythology and literature,” a few interesting questions.
A little different this week - we’ll be looking at an early medieval polymath and one of his works, which Gibbons describes as “a golden volume not unworthy of the leisure of Plato or Tully, but which claims incomparable merit from the barbarism of the times and the situation of the author”.
Some more ancient coins featuring architecture… Here, we’ll be looking at the ‘cityscape’ (urban landscape), a longstanding subject of artwork. This was usually reserved for larger coins (sometimes medallions) so that intricate detail could be engraved by the die-cutter. Again, check out the links if you want to learn more!
