There is no better researcher, remedy finder, or medicine maker than a mama with a sick baby and a team of doctors who cannot give her the answers she is looking for. I was that mom, and honestly, without my son this Substack would not exist.
Some of you know our story. When my son was three years old he received a liver transplant that saved his life. All sorts of things came at this boy along the way, before and after, and one of them was his teeth.
Before his transplant, his body could not excrete bile and eliminate it the way it is supposed to happen. Bile dumps into the small intestine, moves through the gut, and you excrete it. My son did not have his main bile duct to direct his bile to his intestines, so it circulated in his body and built up. One place it wreaked havoc was his teeth. That super acidic bile marinated his baby and adult teeth way up in his gums long before they ever erupted. It took a lot of his enamel and left his teeth weak.
Before I get into the routine I want to talk about fluoride for a second because I know it is a topic that divides people in this space.
I used to be anti fluoride. I am not anymore. Here is where I landed. Fluoride works, the research on remineralization is solid, and yes it is toxic, but if you are spitting it out after brushing is it really an issue? Honestly I do not know. What I do know is that every natural toothpaste I tried over several years left my mouth feeling sticky and unclean, so I switched back and my teeth have never felt cleaner.
So for this routine, use whatever toothpaste you like. The toothpaste is not the star of the show here. As long as it is actually cleaning your teeth, you are fine.
As far as hydroxyapatite, I am not a fan. I will have a full post on that soon.
