Reflux Isn’t an Acid Problem. It’s a Muscle Problem.

And one mineral helps end reflux for good.

Have you struggled with reflux and nothing helps long term?

You fix your diet, take supplements, avoid tomatoes, spicy foods, citrus, chocolate, and fatty meals. You even sleep propped up, yet the heartburn still shows up.

There’s a missing piece almost no one talks about. It’s zinc.

I learned about zinc through my biological dentist. She noticed my youngest son had enamel wear on the back of his bottom teeth. She said they often see that pattern with reflux that enters the mouth at night and erodes enamel. Then she said something that surprised me. “Start him on a little zinc to help strengthen the sphincter.”

That conversation sent me straight down a rabbit hole. I can’t just give my son zinc without knowing how it works, what it does, and why. That’s how my brain operates, I need to understand the full picture before I begin.

And this is why I have a Substack. It’s my space to unpack everything I learn, follow every thread of curiosity, and turn my research into something useful.

Zinc helps tighten and repair the lower esophageal sphincter, the small muscle that keeps stomach acid from moving upward. When that muscle weakens, acid leaks up into the throat and mouth. Zinc helps strengthen it by improving muscle tone and supporting the connective tissue that holds it together.

It also supports collagen production and healing of the esophageal lining that gets irritated from acid exposure. People who have reflux are often low in zinc, especially if they’ve taken acid blockers for a long time which deplete zinc.

Zinc does another important job: it helps your stomach make the right amount of acid. Too little acid slows digestion, which creates pressure in the stomach and pushes acid upward. By restoring zinc, you help your body digest properly again.

There’s even a form called zinc-carnosine, used in Japan for stomach ulcers, that protects and repairs the gut lining. It strengthens the mucosal barrier, reduces irritation, and supports healing.

If you want to try it yourself:

• Eat more zinc-rich foods like oysters, red meat, and egg yolks. A few oysters can supply more than 400% of your daily needs.
• If supplementing, look for zinc carnosine or zinc gluconate. My friend Meghan with Frtil.com has an Oyster Zinc Supplement that would work great as a wholefood source.
• Don’t overdo it. Too much zinc for too long can lower copper, so keep balance in mind. Focus on wholefoods and supplements as needed.

Sometimes reflux isn’t from too much acid or certain foods. It’s from a weak barrier. Zinc helps rebuild that barrier so your body can do what it’s designed to do.

Your body knows how to heal when it has what it needs. Zinc is one of those missing root cause pieces.
