Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey is introducing one of the world’s oldest stories to a new generation. And, the debates have already begun.
Did Odysseus really sail to Sicily? Was the Cyclops inspired by a real place? Where did Circe live? Did any of this actually happen?
They’re good questions. But let’s take a step back.
The Odyssey didn’t begin as a book. It lived for centuries in people’s voices before anyone wrote it down. The text that survives is extraordinary. But it isn’t the whole story. Writing preserves words. It doesn’t preserve everything the audience already knew, which is pretty true for any corpus we are working with. And that may be one of the biggest blind spots in research.
