We’ve been spending lots of time in the car this summer with our boys — going on nearby adventures or longer road trips — so I thought I’d create a roundup of our favorite forms of entertainment when the kids are squabbling in the back and need a little extra something to keep spirits high.

These are items that have earned their spot in our carry-on, day pack, church tote, etc. They are small but mighty and do plenty of heavy-lifting when trying to keep kids quiet during church, on flights, restaurants, etc. I like to have a couple of these stashed away at all times for when I’m needing a little extra help :)

  • Magnetic wood blocks — I love these travel-sized magnetic blocks because pieces are a lot less likely to fall underneath the table when at a restaurant, etc.

  • Mini Magna Tiles

  • Go fish card game — the illustrations on this particular set are really sweet

  • Monster Trucks — I’ve done a complete 180 on these plastic figurines. They are a toy that gets a lot of mileage out of them. We’ve taken them everywhere from hikes to airports and everything between. I love them because they are an instant connector with other kids (we usually bring a couple extras to share with kids at the park), and they entertain for hours on hours. Endless ramp and flip opportunities

  • Yoto Mini. Our favorite starter pack is the Julia Donaldson one

  • Magnetic book. I love this one for flights because it fits perfectly on the tray table
