Your #1 resource for facing the New Year with courage

Happy New Year!

As we move forward into all the unknowns of the coming year, Joshua 1:9 immediately comes to mind.

I’m sure you’re familiar with this famous call to courage: “Have I not commanded you? Be strong and of good courage; do not be afraid, nor be dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.” (NKJV)

I’ve known that verse for as long as I can remember, but I must admit that until recently, I had never really grasped the verse that precedes it, verse 8:

“This Book of the Law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate in it day and night, that you may observe to do according to all that is written in it.” (NKJV)

Courage and strength are not virtues that we muster up on our own. This passage reminds us that they are intricately linked to our dependence on God’s Word.

“The Book of the Law” in Josh. 1:8 refers to the first five books of the Bible, the only Scripture that Joshua would have had at that time.

As Christians on this side of the cross, we are privileged to have access to the Scriptures in their entirety. We can therefore read this as a command to meditate (think deeply) about all of the Bible.

Writing requires strength and courage. It requires perseverance through self-doubt, fear, anxiety, exhaustion, and a host of other obstacles.

But as Christians, we have an incredible resource in God’s Word. The more we spend time in it, the more we see who we are and who God is.

And as we see our Saviour more and more clearly, we are empowered more and more to live and write as servants who grasp the “real reality” of the eternal kingdom that cannot be shaken.

God has given us His word as an incredible roadmap to enable us to work, live, and write in a way that is honouring to Him and that brings us closer to Him.

Whatever your other goals may be for this year, I challenge you to strive to be a person who is daily soaking yourself in Scripture.

Be a writer who is immersed in God’s word.

The more you are shaped by His word, the more your words will be shaped by Him.
