145. Drawing Your Territory

After last week’s post about the bear house I hadn’t drawn, I’ve been paying more attention to the places on my regular route around town that I love/like/am into/am curious about, and realizing that I really ought to pay more attention to those things (githerments, if you will) and draw them.

At the farmer’s market, I often draw bits and pieces of this cool old house, because it’s in the middle of the farmer’s market action. But I decided to sit down and really draw the whole thing.

A house like this looks complicated but it really isn’t. You just have to figure out the overall shape, and then the smaller shapes within that. It’s a grid, really. This house is basically a tic-tac-toe board.

The first thing I do is to measure it with my pen. I move the pen closer to me or farther away from me until the building looks to be about the same size as the pen. Then I flip it on its side. Am I dealing with a square? A rectangle? Two squares side by side, or two squares on top of each other? In this case, the building is a square. Easy. Here it is:
