We’ve talked before about pocket-sized sketchbooks. I carry one around with me all the time, in the same bag that holds my phone and wallet. Usually I only have one pen with me, but I can always add more color when I get home.
Lately, I’ve started to do this more and more when I travel, too. I love a big fancy sketchbook for a trip, and I always want to take unreasonable amounts of art supplies with me. But I’m less and less willing to schlep much of anything around. I prefer not to blame this on aging, but on the fact that I want to cover a lot of ground when I’m traveling and a big bag is a distraction. Whatever the reason, I’m definitely downsizing my art supplies.
On a trip, I’ll still take my watercolor palette and some markers, and I might still taking them out sketching with me sometimes. But it’s more likely that I’ll add color back at the hotel, or while I’m waiting around at the train station, etc.
So that’s all good. But there’s one problem. Those little passport-sized, paper-bound sketchbooks just don’t look like anything sitting on the shelf. I like a nice chunky book that makes a statement. Could I bind a bunch of these together?
The bookbinders reading this will tell me that yes, with a few supplies and a few tutorials and some stitching, I could absolutely make a very simple cover that would turn a few random pocket sketchbooks into a book.
But you know what? The same company that makes the notebooks (the Travelers Company Sketch 08, Passport size) also makes a binder for them (Travelers Company Binder 016)!
