Reddit isn't just about posting

I was chatting with a start-up last week about social media. It's a great brand, with a few target audiences.

One network I recommended was reddit. She had spoken with some friends about it, and every single one of them told her not to use reddit.

"Brands can't post there" was their response. They weren't social media managers, had no experience managing brands professionally, and didn't really seem to "get" social media.

Social media isn't always about posting. If it were, it would be called "posting media."

Being a part of the communities there gets way more exposure than posting.

Reddit is a beast, and if you go in like a cheerleader, you’ll not only get zero engagement, you’ll get downvoted by trying to sell, rather than being a part of the community.

You won’t get the followers you get on other networks, but you do get Karma.

Karma is the activity on the account. Activity includes posting, commenting, and upvoting. These are all important on every social network, and reddit is no different.

Read the rules in each subreddit before posting, too. If you choose not to follow the rules, you risk getting kicked out of the subreddit. If your target audience is there, you miss out on them, too.

Hire a pro. For me, I have been on reddit since June 2012, and I only have 25 followers.

But…I have 22,368 Karma, which means my account is active.

Yours should be, too.
